My Castle Experience
I went in for my LAVH, possible TAH on Wednesday morning August 29th. My surgery was scheduled for 1:00 so I was told to be there at 11:30. Some of you will remember from my prior posts that my husband left 1 month before my surgery so I was dealing with all the emotion from that also. I wanted to go through with the procedure anyway. I had 2 good friends with me and was called back after sitting in the waiting room for 30 minutes. They started the IVs right away and I was relaxed. The surgery lasted about 90 minutes and I don't remember anything much after the initial IVs. I woke up moaning with nurses telling me to push the button, the demerol pump. Soon my friends were next to me and I learned that it was all done LAVH and I was happy about that. Several people came to visit that first day but I was in the anesthesia, demerol fog and really couldn't visit with them. I had oxygen, catheter and these weird blow-up things on my legs to prevent blood clots. I didn't get up the first night. Day 2 the doctor came in early and told me that she actually found little endo or adhesions and that the Lupron had done it's job and the surgery was a breeze. They were concerned about my oxygen levels and wanted me to do breathing exercises to prevent pneumonia. The catheter was removed and I was encouraged to walk. I was feeling a great deal of pain in my lungs and chest, not my stomach. I knew it was gas pains and was begging for GasX or something like that for releif but they said the only way to releive the gas is to walk. Walking was rough but I pushed myself a little more each time. Sometime on that day, I asked them to bring me oral pills for the pain because I didn't like how groggy the demerol pump was making me and I was so nauseous. It took a lot of effort and a lot of water to pee the first time and I considered that a small victory but wanted to pass gas so bad. That finally started around midnight of the second night and what a releif it was. My appetite was returning also. Then Friday morning the doc came back and said I could go home. I was blown away, less than 48 hours and she was sending me home, if someone would be with me. I made a few phone calls and someone came to get me. Noone was with me either time when the doctor came in and since I was on pain meds and all I'm fuzzy about any discharge instructions she may have given me. I understand about the medicine but people say "when can you drive", "when can you go back to work", etc. I have no idea about those things. She told me to come see her in 4 weeks but didn't cover any of these specifics. My husband whom I was with for 17 years called the morning of surgery to say "Good luck" and I told him to stop acting like he cares now-so he hasn't called since. This is hard but it's the easiest way for me to cope. My mother and sister came from TN and got here on Sat night. They aren't letting me do much and are fussing now for me to get off the computer. I'm taking Percocet and Motrin, trying to get off the Percocet and not doing much but they are only here for 1 week. I feel amazingly well but tire easily and need sleep. I hope all this helps some of you LIW know what to expect. She started me on Premarin right away. I would just encourage someone to write down all the questions for the doctor so the discharge instructions can all be covered. I'm very fuzzy there. Talk to ya later.

welcome home
Hi
I'm glad your surgery & recovery is going fairly smooth... I'm sorry that you are having to go through additional emotional problems with your husband.
I'm glad you have friends & family to support you.
Your hospital visit sounds much like mine except that I was released after only 1 night! Iwas happy once I was home though.
Most of the advice on this site has been right on...drink lots of H20 & walk. Every day does get better & don't over do it. I overdid it the 1st week home & ended up in Ches. ER with heavy bleeding & PAIN!
Best wishes
Pam
