Eating: Vitamins, deficiencies, foods after Hysterectomy

I was wondering. Are there any special foods or vitamins that women find help with any deficiencies after their hysterectomy? I was just wondering. I know how complex the human body is. I am going to talk to my doctor. But I just wanted to hear from some women with experience.

I was wondering the same thing!
Especially any vitamin supplements I can take. I know a multivitamin isn't ideal, but it's better than no vitamins at all.

If you have kept your ovaries, you aren't as likely to have any deficiencies after a hysterectomy. Many concerns are related to menopause and the lack of estrogen. We are working on an article on eating well during menopause, so maybe some of those tips will be helpful for you.

You need to be sure you are getting calcium for your bones. Calcium from food is best as too much calcium through a supplement can turn into kidney stones which are very painful.

You also need iron, but not in a supplement. Without a period, your body has no natural way to eliminate too much iron. Instead, eat foods high in iron and only use a supplement or iron fortified vitamin under the instructions of your physician.

You also want to have plenty of fiber in your diet. It helps with keeping your bowels working well and fighting some weight issues.

You need good fat in your diet, such as what is found in avocados, fatty, fish, and nuts.

Lots of fruits and veggies will give you the vitamins and nutrients you need as well as fill you up so you avoid foods and snacks that aren't as healthy for you. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables can also help you combat weight issues.

Depending on your diagnosis, some women are finding they are deficient in vitamin D. Getting out in the sun more is helpful, and if the deficiency is severe you may need a supplement prescribed by your doctor.

In general, you need a healthy diet that includes a variety of foods and colors. Your doctor can help you adjust your diet to include the best foods for you and help you decide if a multi-vitamin is right for you. If you do need a multi-vitamin, many doctors recommend women who have had a hysterectomy choose one that is for women in menopause as those do not contain iron.
