Questions about post op sleep
1. A post I read a few weeks ago said something to lead me to believe I'll have trouble sleeping any other way, post op. I never sleep on my stomach or back, but always on my side. In fact, sleeping on my back results in severe lower back pain. Am I going to have problems after surgery?
2. I saw some reference to something I think was called a "tummy pillow" (and I hope, that if that's not what it was called, someone will know what I'm talking about). What is that?

You can find these pillows at Wal-Mart, they also have cases for them. I bought myself 2. You should bring one to the hospital with you (especially for the ride home as well). It is like a travel pillow.

Questions about post op sleep
Hey again,
Just looked in the hyster store and this is what it says for the pillows....sounds like a great thing...will have to get one too!
"Every princess needs an extra pillow to strap between her and the seatbelt, to cover the tummy while she laughs or coughs and simply for security!"

Questions about post op sleep
I am a tummy sleeper also, and it was 4 -5 weeks before I could sleep on my tummy. I hate sleeping on my back and find it very uncomfortable. Here is what I did, I bunch up alot of blankets and was able to spoon them so I could at least lay on my side. It gave support to my stomach and was comfortable.
My tummy pillow was a decorative bed pillow. You will use it when you sneeze, cough, laugh or throw up.
Good luck!!

Questions about post op sleep
Before surgery I was strictly a side sleeper. After surgery I have slept on my back, mainly because it hurts to sleep on side I know soon I can start sleeping on my side again, but my body seemed to adjust fine to back sleeping- and no major back pain for me either. I alternate usually half a night on couch, half in bed, because I find it helps. Good luck!

Questions about post op sleep
Speaking of sleep - does the hospital let you get some sort of sleep or do they get up "up and adam" almost constantly?

Lynda.... They took my stats every 3-4 hours. I couldn't sleep anyways so it didn't bother me to much.

Questions about post op sleep
I wasn't able to sleep at all while in the hospital. The morphine and the pain meds given after that had that effect on me. Not to mention the nurses coming in every 3 to 4 hours as well as the lab technician that thought it was necessary to draw my blood at 5:30am every morning!! UGH!
Once at home, I was able to sleep much better although, I alternate between the sofa, recliner and my bed every night. It is getting better though!
Good luck to you!

Questions about post op sleep
I just dozed periodically at the hospital. Between the nurses coming in so often to check on my stats, and take blood samples, etc, I really didn't get much sleep.
I am a side sleeper, too. When I first got home, I had to sleep flat on my back. I put "bumper" pillows on both sides to make it more comfortable. I was surprised how well I was able to sleep--I guess I was tired! It took over 2 weeks to be able to sleep on my side. I just woke up on my side one morning! Now I can even start out on my side. Ahh--it's the small things in life that make us happy!
