Being sent home with catheter

I am having a LSH and A&P repair done next week. It's outpatient with my surgery being at 7am and my doctor saying I will be going home by that evening. I also just found out at my pre-op that I will be sent home with a catheter which I will have to remove myself the next day. Has anyone else had the same kind of circumstances? Feeling a little nervous here.

Re: Being sent home with catheter

I am beginning to think this is pretty uncommon. Anyone?

Re: Being sent home with catheter

I think it may be uncommon. I haven been here long enough to see any other posts about the patient removing their catheter so I could be wrong.

My understanding is that it's not difficult to do. I'm sure the nurse will give you detailed instructions as well.

I'm sure some of the other ladies that have had them removed, by a nurse, can give you better info on the procedure.

Good luck on Tuesday!

Mine was removed a few hours in the hospital after the surgery. It didn't seem difficult for the nurse to do. I don't think I could do it myself though. I am sure they will give you very detailed instructions in how to do it.

Re: Being sent home with catheter

I think this is uncommon but it is easy to remove the catheter. There is a port that you will attach a syringe to and pull out fluid from the balloon that is holding the catheter into the bladder. Once the syringe has the fluid in it, then you simply slowly withdraw the catheter and dispose of it.

Re: Being sent home with catheter

Thank you ladies!! I spoke to my sister in law who is a nurse in the hospital where my doctor operates and she heard he is known for sending home c-sections just one day after surgery. That seems crazy but she also heard he is experienced and good at what he does so I am trusting him.
She told me if she is not working she will come and remove the catheter which makes me feel a lot better!! It's one less thing to worry about!
Now to focus on other things until the big day.

Re: Being sent home with catheter

Thank you ladies!! Still not too excited about it but what is there really to be excited about with a hysterectomy? I guess maybe the end of periods! Okay, that's a positive! :-)
