Sex-related question for women with no cervix

Today is my 6-week milestone. I hope to be cleared to resume intercourse at my final post-op appt. on Monday. Here is an off-the-wall question for women who've had their entire uterus (including cervix) removed:

Now that the body has lost it's mechanism for providing natural vaginal cleansing, will the vagina have an odor -- especially after the depositing of semen? I really enjoy oral sex as a prelude to intercourse and I'd hate to think that I need to resort back to douching to feel "springtime fresh" after sex.

Also since I had my ovaries removed as well, what do the sisters in the know recommend for vaginal lubrication? I can't stand the sticky, gummy feel of the K-Y jelly. Are there any recommendations for a more effective lubricant?

Thanks, ladies. Anticipating the once again!

Donna,

I have no cervix and I can say that for me, there is a slight odor. I usually use a wet wipe or diaper wipe to cleanse after, then follow with a shower later. I too hate the KY. You can try
replens(it is inserted into the vaginal vault) or a silicone based lubricant. You can find replens at any drug store, but for a good silicone lube, well you would need to go to a well,
a sex shop. They have a huge selection, and can help you find one that will suit you. Please stay away from products that contain petroleum though as these can irritate the vagina. I hope this helps. Jenn

oh yes! i was just about to recommend the silicone based products as well! they are absolutely divine!!! *TMI Warning!* use them on your man too when/if you go for a little "hand" action!!! he'll absolutely go insane!! it feels delicious!!! i used one called swiss navy (it has a velvety feel...)
Here's from amazon.com:
Product Description
Swiss Navy premium personal lubricants are setting the standard in today's marketplace. The finest ingredients available are blended into the two formulas - Silicone and Water-Based - for exceptional glide and slickness.

Astroglide is another one of the silicone based ones, and I've used it for years. I got it at the sex shop, but others have mentioned seeing it in the drugstore with the condoms and stuff.

But I do have to say that, even though I have had everything removed, including cervix and ovaries, I haven't had any issues with lubrication or odor. When I have used my Astroglide since the surgery, it has been because I needed to "refresh", so to speak, for continuation, not because I had no natural lubricant to begin with. So it's not necessarily a foregone conclusion that these issues will certainly follow with a full hyst and BSO.

I think I'll be in for more of a dry time of it since I'm going 'au naturel' and not using any HRT from what I've read on other posts.

This should be interesting to say the least. Thank God my husband doesn't use Viagra or any of those "male enhancement" supplements -- I've read that most women need to ease back into it especially if the cuff is tender and slower to heal. Any advice on the first time?

Not an off-the-wall question at all. I can only speak for myself, but I have *fewer* problems with odor now than I did before my hysterectomy, so if you have an odor problem, it is something you should speak to your doctor about. As far as the semen is concerned, the same thing will happen now as happened before. The opening in your cervix is so small that the great majority of the semen came out of your vagina after intercourse before your hysterectomy, and the same thing will happen now.

As for the question about personal lubrication, the Hyster Sisters store offers an excellent personal lubricant, and there are others on the market, too. You may have to try a few before you find one which works best for you. It's an important issue, because you don't want the tissues to become dry and irritated.

Hope this helps.

I have had no problems whatsoever with lubrication or odor... and trust me, I've had plenty of practice since being cleared by my doctor. Apparently he missed the action as much as I did!!! LOL

Hi, we use astroglide it really works great. I have found that I do better not being on top just yet. It seems to ache a little. Also, if I have a very busy day I experience more aching after sex than if I didnt so on those nights we go a little easier. As far as odor, I find there is less odor than before. Go figure. I believe its because (TMI) everything comes right back out when your done. I keep a wash cloth and baby wipes handy for right after. I always shower later on that night or the next morning but I have always done that. Take your time and try to relax. Dont obcess about everything that can go wrong. OH BTW, it took a few times before big "O" really kicked in. So, if at first you dont succeed...Try Try again.LOL!!!
