Those that had to do the Mag Citrate I have a ?

OK, I started mine at 10am, thought I had finished it by 12 but just found a little bit left in the glass. I must have got distracted and set it down, anyway I just downed that, it wasn't much maybe an ounce but I wanted to know how long I will be running to the bathroom for. Does anyone know how long it takes for a 10oz bottle to work it's way through? If this is over with and I'm not clear in and clear coming out the back end I need to do an enema or two, which I am dreading! So I guess I'm wondering how long I should wait before trying the enema, as my pre op instructions don't say.

Re: Those that had to do the Mag Citrate I have a ?

I had to do the Mag Citrate about 1 p.m. the day before. It took about 4 hours to kick in. Ran to the bathroom about 4 times but not so bad then I had to do the enema's (2) before I went to bed so I started about an hour before I was ready to go too sleep. I did not wake up at all during the night to use the bathroom. Good luck too you!!

Re: Those that had to do the Mag Citrate I have a ?

When I had to do the mag citrate before, it didn't have to be completely clear. Just no chunks. I was up all night running to the bathroom. I am certainly not looking forward to having to do this in a few weeks. The doctor said it was optional but recommended and I would rather be safe than sorry.

Yeah, I'm starting to think the clear in and clear out is impossible. I've been craping since 1030 and it's still not clear, I don't get it. I really, really don't want to do the enema!

Re: Those that had to do the Mag Citrate I have a ?

I had to do the Mag Citrate too. I was told to do it at bedtime 2 days before and then clear liquids the day before.

By morning the Mag Citrate was working.

I never got clear in - clear out. Actually, I don't think it is possible for clear to come out of the rectum but that is a biology/chemistry/anatomy class discussion I think.

I asked my Dr. why he did a bowel cleansing and he told me he does it to reduce the size of the intestines. That way, when he tipped me up, towards my head, they moved out of his way, because they were not full of food.

Well, it's officiallly 11 hours after my first bathroom trip and it's FINALLY clear coming out!! Thank goodness, no enema for me tonight, it's after 10pm and I am so done with pooping today! My intestines may be smaller, but my poor but is on fire! TMI I know, but I'm so glad it's almost over

Re: Those that had to do the Mag Citrate I have a ?

I have mine next week, bu they gave me the option to take pills. 20 between 9 and 10 am, and then the remaining 12 pills between 6 and 7pm.

From what I was told, the drink take approxmately 30 minutes to begin and lasts all day into the night. The only difference with the pills is that it takes about 2 hours to take effect - - and no food after 7:30 am. Definitely not looking forward to this. Good Luck!!!

A tip for bowel prep -- have some surgical gloves on hand. Before you start going poo, liberally apply Vaseline to your anal area. Reapply as needed. Believe me, this helps tremendously with the "sore tush" syndrome.
