Doc said I'd have no hormone changes

I had an emergency hysterectomy during a planned c-section this past November. They took my uterus only. (What is the abbreviation for that?) The OB told me I wouldn't feel any differently physically without my uterus. But, I have wicked hot flashes, and generally a very tough time regulating my body temp. Sometimes I'm cold, but usually hot, and no one else will be. I know it's hormones, but I'm trying to figure out if it has something to do with the loss of my uterus, or is it because I'm breastfeeding?

Re: Doc said I'd have no hormone changes

I have had similar issues since having #3 (back in 2001) - extremely hot - I thought it was due to breastfeeding too? But alas, it never subsided. With the current heat wave I am still "hot" so I have no idea if it will subside or not - I know my hormones are all over the board - so most likely I would have to put it to hormones??? I always tell everyone I have been in pre-menopause for 12years LOL!

When you have a hysterectomy the ovaries can go into shock or shut down, sometimes temporary, sometimes permanent. They don't quite understand why but it may have something to do with either nerve damage in the area or a change in the blood supply to the ovary. Some people have their ovaries supplied from an ovarian artery, some from both ovarian and uterine arteries. The uterine artery is cut during a hysterectomy so can affect blood supply to the ovaries too. They also say that post hysterectomy women reach menopause on average 5 years earlier than women who keep their uterus.

It might be worth going to your personal care physician / GP, a women's health clinic or specialist menopause centre and asking for a full hormonal work up to see what it going on. Good luck.
