2 weeks and terrified
I am having my hysterectomy on October 3rd and I'm terrified. My doctor thinks that she can do it lap but said if not (due to previous c-section scaring and fibroids) then she will have to do a LAVH. Please, if any of you have have either of these surgeries...please e-mail me and let me know what to expect as far as pain etc. I'm terrified.
Thanks
Visuli

Hi Visuli - I'm having a TVH (possibly an LAVH) at the end of the week.
I highly recommend going to the "Tell Your Hyst Story" section of this pre-op section of the forums. I read a whole bunch of TVH stories and they ultimately made me feel much better. There are some people who have complications and so forth, but the vast majority have mainly good things to report and good experiences. You don't always notice that in the regular forums because the people who had good experiences generally post their hyst story and then move on from hystersisters and move on with their lives.

2 weeks and terrified
It's been three weeks since my LSH. I had two grapefruit-sized and one lemon-sized fibroid. The whole thing took two hours and I stayed in the hospital over night. To be perfectly honest, the worst pain was in my shoulder from the lap-gas. It irriatates a nerve in the shoulder and really hurts. Heat helps. I got nauseous (sp?) from morphine (threw up twice while my family was visiting earlier in the day, eekers!) so pain control while I was in distress from it was a bit more challenging, but (*here is the key*)it didn't last long. I got up and showered (sitting) and dried my hair (standing!) before I went home from the hospital.
Once I got home I stayed on the couch three and a half days, had no trouble with stairs, went to bed and slept propped up the first and second nights, by the third night I could lay flat and by the fourth night could roll over on one side. I took Percocet the first two nights, prescription strength advil during the day the first three days home and haven't needed anything since.
I could get into my fat jeans by the 10th day and am working into my skinny jeans, but more because I've gained a little weight (unrelated to the surgery) and not because my belly is still swollen. (it isn't).
You'll be okay. You will survive, maybe with a little pharmaceutical help, but you'll survive just the same!
Best wishes!
Beseda

Oh honey, you'll do great. I had a LAVH and was thrilled because I too had 2 previous c-sections and big fibroids. The pain was NOTHING like after a c-section in my opinion! I spotted for a day, stayed in the hospital only one night, am 6 days post op and feel great other than getting a bit tired if I do too much! The worst pain I felt was the lap-gas - have to admit that sucked but it was sort of nice knowing it wasn't my incision or anything that hurt - just the gas! That went away about 3 days later.
Other than that, no swelly belly, I poop, I fart, I do it all! The waiting and the anticipating and the "what ifs" are absolutely the worst part of the surgery, I promise!

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement. I really needed to hear that. You have relieved my mind a lot. I just wish that it were all over.

And to be honest, if my dr. called me now and said they forgot to remove something and I had to have surgery again in a week, I wouldn't mind a bit - it's really not that scary!

You are wonderful! Thank you so much for responding to my post. I was really worried...I've heard the horror stories...I think that now I can put my mind at peace. Thank you so much! You don't know how much that has helped me.

Visuli
I had a LAVH. I would do it again tomorrow. As Beseda stated, I too had a problem with the gas. I had it in my right shoulder. I didn't know what was happening to me when I had that pain. The surgery itself was not so bad. I have three small incisions, one at the belly button and one on each side (beside my hips). There was some soreness in the belly but hey, it's major surgery. I also had a cath in place when I awoke. That was taken out the next day (no pain when removed). I also had a "packing" which was just inside the vagina to catch any blood flow (like a pad).Hardly any blood. That too was removed the next day (no pain). I went in on a wed and was home the next afternoon. I also had a bladder sling and if it were not for that , there would have been little pain.
I know you are scared of the unknown and what to expect. Your sisters are here to help you any way we can
Please try not to worry so much and ask all the questions you can think of to help you get through this. We will be here for you.

Thank you so much for taking the time to help put my fears at ease. This has been the most support that I have ever received. My doctor said that if she does a LAVH then she has to take my cervix....did they take yours?

They took my cervix and I am glad about that. Everyone I've talked to says they don't miss it a bit, and I didn't want to deal with ANY sort of mini-periods or anything - I'm done bleeding! The thought of no cervix made me cringe pre-surgery, but now it's really no different at all. Feels like a regular vagina to me and I can't wait to try it out in a few weeks!
