how can this happen?

I had my surgery on Jan 20 this year. Since then I have had weeks of unexplained bleeding. My gyno told me that there was nothing more she can do. Said that I was having a period and that she might have left a small piece of my uterus behind during surgery. I sopke to another dr at a speciality hospital and they wanted me to go to the ER and get checked out. They did a sonogram...both internal and external. Guess what they found!? My uterus is still there! The doctor only took a very small portion of it and my left ovary. Iwas just wondering if anybody else has had any similar situations? I so so upset and lost at what to do now. I do have an appointment with a new doctor next week to see what they suggest. Can anybody please help me? I am so lost and confused! thanks!!

Re: how can this happen?

Was this supposed to be a partial hyst where they left the cervix, or were they supposed to take the full thing? I'd get copies of the op notes and the pathology report, from the hospital. I have read here before of this happening but you have to wonder how and why. I'm sorry it happened to you. Let us know what you find out. I sure would be unhappy about that, I can only imagine what you are going through.

Re: how can this happen?

From what you say it sounds like you were supposed to have a full hysterectomy - if this wasn't the case surely it would have been explained to you! This doctor sounds incompetent to me - I'm glad you're seeing another doctor and hope they can find a solution, you must be dreadfully worried.

Re: how can this happen?

I see your surgery type is SAH, in a SAH the cervix is left. That may be what they are seeing. If the cervix is left, you can still have a period.

Re: how can this happen?

In a SAH the cervix is left as others have said. I had a friend of mine that had a SAH and had a sono. They kept telling her she had her uterus left.. Long story short, the tech kept seeing the cervix and assumed uterus was there too..

(((brwneyedprncess)))

Try not to panic! As (((Kim))) and (((gmac4_11))) have pointed out, you had the SAH meaning a partial hysterectomy. We have had many women post on the site that when having an ultrasound after a partial hysterectomy, the tech would tell them they had a uterus. That reiterates why a tech is not suppose to give information. They are only trained to take pictures and they often do not know how to properly and correctly interpret the pictures they take.

Here is an article that explains why you can have bleeding (called a mini period) if you have your cervix and at least one ovary: Mini Period After Hysterectomy

in there and best wishes for your upcoming appointment.
