Re: Salt!!!! Give me salt!

That didn't happen to me after surgery, but it *did* happen to me during chemo. I craved pickles and although my appetite was wonky, I could eat just about anything if I put pickles on it. Because of the chemo I was having weekly bloodwork. When my bloodwork came back for the first week, it showed that my electrolytes were low. My body was craving salt because it *needed* salt.

So my advice is that if you're craving salty food, go for it. The body knows what it needs.

Re: Salt!!!! Give me salt!

SaLt craving can be a sign of dehydration, make sure you drink plenty of water.

Re: Salt!!!! Give me salt!

I had the opposite effect. For the first 2-3 weeks after my surgery, everything tasted too salty to me. Still does to some extent. Weird!

I am almost thinking I have been drinking too much water. I drank a jug of Pedialyte and the salt cravings seem to have reduced.

I actually reduced the quantity of water a little. I was drinking a couple nalgenes worth, plus a couple small bottles and a glass here and there. My bladder was on overtime so it's pleased as well.

I think I got a little obsessed with flushing the anesthesia & drugs....

Thanks ladies!!

Re: Salt!!!! Give me salt!

That sounds like what happened when I having chemo. My chemo sessions started and ended with a hydration phase to help my kidneys flush the chemo med. Then I was told to drink lots of water that evening and at least two litres a day for each of the two subsequent days. My body needed salt to balance all that water, and it sounds as if yours did too.

The good news is that the anesthesia and the drugs are certainly flushed by now! :-)
