Bad Cough
HELLO LADIES,
JUST A QUICK QUESTION, YESTERDAY I CAME DOWN WITH A PRETTY BAD CAUGH. I THINK IT'S DRAINAGE AND I FEEL LIKE I'M CHOKING. IT LASTS FOR A MINUTE OR SO AND I HAVE TO REALLY PRESS ON MY BELLY WHEN IT HAPPENS. I'M ONLY ONE WEEK OUT AND IT ALWAYS BRINGS ME TO TEARS. MY QUESTION IS IS IT POSSIBLE TO BREAK OPEN MY STICHES? INTERNAL ONES OF COURSE. NOTHING ON THE OUTSIDE HAS SPLITT, BUT I HAVE NOTICED THAT SINCE THIS STARTED, I'VE STARTED HAVING A BLOODY DISCHARGE WHERE I WASN'T HAVING ANY BEFORE. ANY IDEAS? THANKS!!!

Bad Cough
(((Mindy)))
Man, I am sorry to hear about the cough you have so early in your recovery!
I have bronchitis which they think has worked itself into pneumonia. Have had it for two weeks now. I am 13 weeks post op and it hurts me still. I can't imagine what you are going through.
I was concerned at 11 weeks post op if I would split stitches inside when I hacked and coughed. Doc said I can still do damage even at this late stage in the game. He told me to brace myself with a pillow each time I coughed. So, common sense tells me, that this early in your recovery, you could possibly do some damage...depending on how bad the cough is and how effectively you are bracing your tummy.
If you are bleeding, you may have pulled the odd stitch or two. If the bleeding becomes bright red and increases in the amount, I would call your doc to be safe. Call your doc anyway to maybe get some suggestions on cough medications that could ease your hacking.
I am on my second set of powerful antibiotics to fight this infection. In the end, it will be three straight weeks of medication. SO... I am just waiting for the next crisis... the good old yeast infection to set in....MAN I HATE BEING A WOMAN SOMETIMES!!!
Hope you are feeling better soon!
Hugs,
Sarah

Bad Cough
Hi Safire:
All I know is that, about two days after my surgery, my anestitist
came in and told me that it really important for me to cough a few times a day and hold a pillow on my incision when I did. He said that fluid can build up in the lungs if I don't.
It seems that it is good you are coughing, but you shouldn't be choking or bleeding as a result.
Definitely call your DR and just ask him/her.

Bad Cough
Safire, I had sinus problems before, during, and after my surgery. I held a pillow against myself when I had to cough. During the times the drainage caught me unawares, I'd forgo politeness, press my hands against me incision, and cough. If you are having a bright red drainage, you should contact your DR. I had such a discharge on my 2nd day home. My DR wanted me to watch if it didn't slow up, or got stronger and gushed. Thankfully, it was over and done with by mid-afternoon. Get with your DR about the drainage... there are lots of drugs like benadryl and the like that will dry things up.
Good luck,
Janet
