Bladder concerns

I am scheduled to have my hysterectomy on Tuesday. I didn't think to tell the doctor about my leaking bladder. She doesn't do bladder surgery. AFter my uterus and cervix are removed, will that relieve the pressure off my bladder and maybe I will not have this problem anymore? I am really worried about this. I could kick myself for not mentioning it to her. I spoke with her nurse a couple of weeks ago and she said it is to late to schedule a urologist now? Has anyone had a hysterectomy and their bladder not leak as bad afterwards or does it get worse? PLease help I am running out of time to get info?

Depends on your female problems if your uterus is enlarged or prolapsed maybe it is pressing against your bladder, I say relax about the bladder issue until after the surgery and see how it goes, then if you are still having the issue then talk to your doctor about refering you to a urologist I also suggest Kegels loosening and tightening of the muscle down there to help strengthen it sometimes that alone helps I too had issues. Good Luck and relax don't kick yourself that might hurt, just take it one step at a time first things first deal with your hysterectomy that is most important a bladder leakage issue can wait a little longer I promise you, never know a hysterectomy might just cure that too! Bladder concerns

I had a urodynamics test yesterday (my surgery is saturday) and he confirmed that my slight stress incontinence is from the weight of my oversized uterus sitting on top of my bladder, so the surgery should sort this out.
Speak to your doctor though - Have you had kids? Sisters who haven't or delivered by C section are far less likely to have bladder prolapses...

It's not too late to ask questions

Good luck

I had slight stress incontinence and was urinating frequently pre-surgery due to the weight of a fibroid-enlarged uterus pressing on my bladder.

I'm now two-and-a-half weeks post op and I've noticed a definate improvement. So yes, the surgery may help -- assuming the cause of the problem is your uterus.

(As far as forgetting to tell the doctor something .... I've done that over and over again throughout this process. Fortunately her receptionist is very kind and doesn't mind me calling with follow-up questions.)

Keep well,
IslandScribe.

Aggie4,

If you are still having questions, you can always postpone until you find out the answers you are seeking. I know it's hard to wait. Your gyn. should have asked you if you were having problems with incontinence. Mine did. It is not to late until you've had surgery. That nurse shouldn't have blown you off like that. Perhaps you could talk to the gyn. about your questions. You are paying for her time and your doctors time and care. You need to do what is best for you.

It is possible that a hysterectomy could take care of your incontinence problems, but it is possible that it might not. A little bit of extra time now could save you from having another surgery.

This is just my , good luck with your decision.

Bladder concerns

I had my surgery 3 weeks ago and was suppose to have the bladder suspension done. My doctor scheduled an appointment with one of her associate doctors that specializes in this.

I was scheduled to have a vaginal hysterctomy with a bladder suspension (perfomed by the two different doctors). They were both there during the surgery, and it happened that my ultrasound was wrong and my uturus was way too big for a vaginal.

Therefore, they proceeded with the total adomomal, and when I woke up the 2nd doctor told me he choose not to perform the bladder suspension, because my surgery lasted much longer than anticipated, and I had substantial blood loss.

He informed me that the bladder suspension could be done in his office in 10 minutes.

Given a choice, I would have them both done at once, but this second surgery sounds much simpler. However, being 3 weeks post op, I wouldn't even consider it right now. The healing is much slower than I would have anticipated.

Bladder concerns

I had my preop on Wednesday and mentioned to the Dr about some stress incontinence I was experiencing. As we talked about it, I realized it is secondary to my other problems. She said that she could refer me to a urologist if I wanted the testing done, but she felt that my fibroids were causing the pressure on my bladder. The referral would have delayed my surgery and with my anemia that may have caused other problems.

I felt much better once I'd talked to the Dr. She made some valid points and arguments and really set my mind at ease. But my problem is very mild and only rears its head when I sneeze.

PS - My Dr did ask me about incontinence at my first appt over a year ago, and at the time I just thought it was a nuisance and since I had such other pressing issues I didn't bring it up. I didn't even think to talk to her about it until I saw it mentioned in Checkpoints.
