swelling & pain after hysterectomy
Hi,
just discovered this website today.
I am 34 yrs old & just had Hysterectomy 12 days ago. I decided to keep my ovaries due to my age.
It took me a whole year to make up my mind for the operation because I was looking for a way of keeping my uterus.
I had to go for this operation due to that the fibroids were so big & my menstration was very heavy & the pain unbearable. removing the fibroids alone meant leaving the uterus in a terrible state & my doctors said that I was most likely to go back for the op if I left the uterus because it would be damaged after the operation because I had 8 myomas ranging from the size of 4 cm to 10 cm. I looked as if I was 16-18 weeks (4-5 months) pregnant
Now i'm so depressed & I feel some sensation in my breasts... Is it normal? How long will It take me to get recover? The "cut" is swelling, itching & painful....
please advise!
Thanx... Lunar

swelling & pain after hysterectomy
Hi Lunar,
I went in the day before you, so am basically at the same point of healing that you are. My abdominal incision is starting to burn a little bit (no itching) and that area is feeling heavy and full. I haven't had twinges in my breasts, but if you're ovulating now it's possible that might be the cause.
You still have a LONG way to go with recovery. The worst thing you can do is push yourself. Take it very, very easy.

Does it mean I will be feeling this sensation each time i am ovulating... I thought I would have no feeling of ovulation after hyst since I have no uterus now & no menstration....
I guess i need to read more on this...
Do you massage the area of the incision? Mine is also hard & iam trying to massage it to reduce the bump. it feels so uncomfortable.
Thanx for your advice Sherilyn

You will still have ovulation symptoms because you have your ovaries. Removing your uterus doesn't change that or prevent ovulation from happening. The only thing that's changed is now you won't have periods from ovulating.
I do slightly push on the incisional area in places (where it's pulling or hurting). Make sure you're not putting your bare fingers on the area though because you don't want to transmit germs. I usually push on the outside of my panties or sweatpants. From what I've read, this swelling/lumpiness/pulling/burning is all normal and will fade with time.

swelling & pain after hysterectomy
dear lunar,
can I also suggest that if the incision is free of bandages now, applying a vitamin E cream is a very useful way of softening up the scar and the lumpiness. As you rub it in, over a period of time the whole thing softens up and the deep lumpiness greatly reduces. I've been using a vitamin E and D oil called bio-oil for the last 2 weeks which is working really well. The scar has gone down from a big deep wide lump, to a narrow much softer and more malleable one. Over time too, my nurse told me, the scar itself will become much less noticeable using a cream like this.

swelling & pain after hysterectomy
Hi Lunar,
i don't think it's so common to have so much pain on passing a bowel motion. though I can relate a little, as occasionally my motions can hurt a lot just at the start, then once moving it's ok. I think it's due to the vaginal cuff (I had my cervix removed also) still being sore, and with a full bowel, as the motion starts to move down on its way out, and presses on the sore cuff, it is initially very painful. I only got this every now and then, and not for a week or so now, so I guess it gets better as the cuff heals.
regards, Robyn
