Scared of swelly belly
I'm reading about this swelly belly and am really scared about that. I already look like I'm 6 months pregnant. If my stomach doesn't getting smaller, I'm already going to be ticked. Now, to read that my stomach may get BIGGER is really depressing. What has been your experience? I'm having SAH and having my uterus removed. I don't know if ppl who've had worse experiences had more work done than me.

Re: Scared of swelly belly
You might get a hint on how your body will be with swelly belly if you think about how your body reacted when you had trauma to your tissues such as having your wisdom teeth removed or if you twisted your ankle. I am not one to swell and was pleasantly surprised that I had minimal swelling with this surgery. Not everyone ends up with a huge swelly belly so keep thinking positive. If you do end up with it, just listen to your body and it will go down eventually.

Re: Scared of swelly belly
Some people get it more than others, and there's no way of saying how long, or even if!
I suspect if you have abdominal surgery with all the girly bits gone, you might have it longer. But it is temporary, unless you also put on weight from over-eating, etc.
The swelly belly is just inflammation from all the internal surgery, stitches, etc etc. Like when you sprain your ankle - it swells. The swelling is the body's way of protecting itself (I think I read that here!), and it tends to be not very pronounced first thing in the morning and gets worse as the day goes on. Like walking around on a sprained ankle, except that it is GOOD for us to be up and about and walking after a hysto. So, there's nothing you can do - if you get it - but wait it out and try not to overdo things too much . If you have it, it'll happen even if you just mooch around carefully and lie down half the day - but then, you might put on weight from inactivity!
As one who did have it for MONTHS after a TAH-BSO, I know how frustrating it is and I was despairing that it would be with me forever. But it gradually went and I got back into my old clothes.
I can't say I'm as flat as I once was, but I think I put on some weight over the southern hemisphere winter (just past) and I'm working on getting rid of that, now that I can exercise like I did pre-op.
You may lose weight post-op. if you have large fibroids, etc!

Re: Scared of swelly belly
I haven't had it too bad, maybe a size or two larger by the end of the day. Silver lining: I've lost a bit of weight, so the pants are big in the morning, but fit just right in the afternoon.

Re: Scared of swelly belly
I am still more comfortable when my stomach bloats up with what I assume is swelly belly than the enlarged belly I had with endo and adenomysis. I was even saying to hubbie that even squatting on the floor to clean a toilet was more comfortable. It was getting so uncomfortable pre op to sit on the floor or bend forward my lower abdomen was just so uncomfortable. 8 weeks out a swelly belly is a more comfortable position to be in than having a sick uterus. xx

Re: Scared of swelly belly
For me, it wasn't an issue at all. I could still were my normal size sweats from day one. Within a week I found I could fit into my skinny jeans. I didn't have a big incision like you will have though. I imagine that will make a difference. But even if you do get it, it's only temporarly and well worth it to be fit and healthy in the long run!

Re: Scared of swelly belly
Kay, the incision size didn't make a difference with me. I was actually smaller in my pants when I went home from the hospital than when I went in. I said I had minimal swelling because months later, once my tummy flattened more, I realized it was mostly swelling and not fat (although there is fat there) that was causing my tummy to have a shelf over my incision. I think our bodies are going to do what they are going to do no matter how the doctors are going in. And you are absolutely right in that is it temporary and it is worth it in the end for most of us.

Re: Scared of swelly belly
I've been wearing baggy sweatpants really not even giving the swelling any thought. Found that not even thinking about it truly helps. If it swells well, so be it. It's just a part of healing. I do notice it will swell after I've done too much but no big deal. Each day brings me closer to normal, and that is what counts!
