Hysterectomy bowel prep and liquid diet questions

My Dr has me on a liquid diet a all day Wednesday for surgery on Thursday.

I am generally the polar opposite of regular, but I think the stress/worry of this, some big work projects, and concern about kids getting each other, me, or DH sick have helped with that-I'm almost normal this week.

Anyway, after a day of jello, broth, and beverages I am supposed to take 2 dulcolax at 3pm. The package says "gently over night." However, with a liquid diet do you think it will be more abrupt? I ask because at 3 I'll be in the car pool line from hell at the elementary school. I may have to postpone by 15-20 minutes.

Any experience with this?

Re: Bowel prep and liquid diet questions

When I've taken that same laxative, it normally takes 6 to 12 hours to kick in. I think you will be fine until later on that night when you won't be able to leave the toilet much :/

Re: Bowel prep and liquid diet questions

I did a different bowel prep for my hysterectomy - magnesium citrate. That took about five hours to work. You will probably have time, but everyone is different. Can someone else get the kids? You can also talk to the doctor to see if you can delay for 20 minutes. I always advise ladies to start the bowel prep when you are home. You do not want to be real far from the bathroom.

No two preps are exactly alike. It would be safer for you to wait until you get home before you take the dulcolax. As with any prep, you need to be close to the bathroom. Hang in there. The preps really aren't bad and it will make it easier for you after surgery.

on your surgery.
