Hysterectomy Pre-Op

This is the first time on this site and it has been a God send; I was diagnosed on 11/02 with one 12 cm fibroid at the top of my uterus. I had no symptoms so the diagnosis came as a total shock to me. I am scheduled for a TH ( with ovary removal) on 5/14/03. My OB/GYN frightened me when in the course of discussion he indicated that he would have an oncology OB/GYN on call duirng the procedure. My question is : is this a routine practice for this type of procedure or am I just over anxious?

Hysterectomy Pre-Op

I had my TAH last May and my doctor told me that it was best to have someone on standby. Everything went smoothly and at the time I thought I was getting the best care possible and that was reassuring. It is an anxious time, think positive.

Hi Bigbear,

Try to think of this as your gyn doing his/her best for you ... nearly all fibroids are benign ... has your gyn indicated that he/she suspects otherwise? Keep asking questions to make sure you understand why the gyn oncologist will be standing by.

My surgery included a urologist and a gyn oncologist, even though cancer was not suspected. I had severe stage 4 endometriosis, so my gyn had the gyn oncologist there to do peritoneal stripping to remove all the endo implants. The gyn oncologists are highly skilled surgeons ... they are the BEST and that's who you want if your surgery is complicated (cancer or not!)

Please keep asking your gyn all those important questions ... the waiting is stressful, even when you aren't concerned about cancer. We'll do our best to provide support. Hang in there.

Beth

Hi bigbear, I am in the same boat as you.I have a 11cm mass and only backpain. I only went to dr with irregular bleeding and thought it was the menopause.I have a gyn/onc doing my tah/bso on 12 may and at least we are prepared whatever they find. I'm told the waiting is the worst bit Heather

Heather,
I see that your surgery date is getting near and just writing to wish you much luck. I am 2 days after you and am a mass of nerves.
