Discharge- if I remove the uterus, does that go away?

One of my biggest complaints with fibroids has been excessive vaginal discharge. Sometimes it's clear, sometimes brownish, and a lot of the time it's my period.

What produces the non-period stuff, the uterus or the cervix? If I get a hysterectomy, I'd probably keep my cervix. Just wondering if no vaginal discharge might be a benefit that comes with hysterectomy. Sick of wearing a pad every single day!!

Thanks.

Discharge- if I remove the uterus, does that go away?

I was under the assumption that vaginal fluids (other than periods) come from the vaginal walls. Maybe someone else knows for positive.

it really depends on where its coming from. have you had normal paps? i'm wondering if some is coming from the cervix, or if its all from the uterus. i'm not really sure if you'll have to wait til after the surgery to know if it will stop...it all depends on where its coming from.

I have read here on HS that if you keep the cervix you can still have mini periods/spotting.

Discharge- if I remove the uterus, does that go away?

I've experienced vaginal discharge since I was about 13 (a couple years before starting my period). It's always been enough to make me wear a pantyliner every day. I had a slight reprieve from it a few years back after having inguinal hernia repair, and thought it was maybe related. Unfortunately it came back.

When I started discussing hysterectomy options with my gynecologist, I asked if there was a possibility that this discharge would disappear if my uterus was removed. He said it was possible. He also said that it could be cervical mucus, and it may remain if I didn't have the cervix removed. At that time, he was kind of steering me towards having a total laparoscopic hysterectomy.

After some other considerations, we decided that LSH was probably my best choice, so I still have my cervix (or at least about 75% of it...my doctor said he actually removed about 1/4 of the cervix). I'm 4 weeks post-op, and anxious to see what my long-term results will be.

As everyone else has said, it depends on the source of the discharge as to whether or not it will disappear along with the uterus.

Discharge- if I remove the uterus, does that go away?

I've always had normal paps, and the discharge problem got way worse as the fibroid issue presented itself, so I'm hoping that it is coming from inside. I will ask the doctor when I go in for my annual exam in October. It's there that I will decide between another myo and hyst, also. I've been leaning toward hyst and if this is another benefit, that might tip my decision totally.

I kept my cervix. Mine did cause discharge for awhile.

The gyn cauterized the cervix and that took care of the problem.
No more discharge for me.

Good luck to you.

Tabitha, it wasn't quite clear from your last message. Did the surgeon cauterize the cervix at the time of the LSH, and it just took a while for the discharge to stop. Or did you have a problem with discharge, and the gyn was somehow able to go back and cauterize after the original surgery.

I'm 1 month post-op, and anxious for the discharge to stop! Just wondering what my options are if it doesn't.
