Maybe I should have a LSH to put my mind at rest

I have now had three doctor's opinions on fibroids, still growing past mennopause.

It all began in 2006. Heavy bleeding, cramping. I was on HRT. I had fibroids. I decided to have a D&C, All my symptoms went away but fibroids are were still there.

I am 64. I keep having ultasounds(I hope they aren't dangerous). My latest utrasound showed changes.(more fibroids and one large one). The cyst on my ovary I had last year is gone. The thing is they had measured two fibroids together making it seem like I had one large one. The largest one I have is about 4cm. Really my uterus hasn't changed that much, but several fibroids.

I have gone to 3 specialists who all have done more ultrasounds. All agree that an LSH might be good for quality of life improvement. I think they mean I can then stop the worry. None think I have cancer, but then how can anyone be sure?

I guess I will wait about 4 months and have another ultasound. Then I will reevaluate AGAIN.

Help! I'm a worry wart. I'm afraid that if I have the LSH I'll have even more problems, but if I don't I'll develop cancer. All the women in my family had hysterectomies except my grandmother who died of ovarian cancer.

Hi there,

I had a hyster due to fibroids..mine were multiple and much bigger than yours. I am almost 40 yrs old.
You seem very bothered by the cancer thing..I totally get that..I worried as well. They took my cervix as well..it was a good thing they did..no cancer but it was a mess too apparently. So far...3 out of the 5 women in my family have had hysterectomies..none have had cancer...2 ofus with fibroids. If you are that uncomfortable..go have it done..it's not a fun procedure...it's a big surgery..but..I know for me it has helped me a ton & now I dont' have to worry about that cancer thing either...that feels great.

I didn't intend to get a hysterectomy..it was a must thing once they figured out the problem..but I did have unusual papsmears for a few years..I feel relieved I don't have to think about it & be scared.

If you are unsure, and you are not in a life or death situation, I think that holding off is the best option! As you mentioned, you can have more problems following a hysterectomy so you do want to be sure that if you choose to have this surgery it is the best option for you!

If you have serious concerns regarding cancer issues, you might find it helpful to speak to an oncologist. Possibly a gynecological oncologist could help you determine what your risks could be.

I wish you all the best as you continue to work through this process to determine what is right for you! S

Re: Maybe I should have a LSH to put my mind at rest

I wouldn't jump to hysterectomy - At 51 I had a robotic-assisted laparoscopic myomectomy. You may want to look into this - it will get rid of the fiborids and prior to the procedure you will have an MRI with contrast - this would tell the surgeon if there is any cancer - which is very unlikely. One of my best friends did have a cancerous (Leiomyosarcoma) fibroid. It is extremely rare and the radiologist on looking at the ultrasound immediately recoginized what she had. She had to have a total hysterectomy within a few days followed by cancer therapy. If you do end up doing the hysterectomy I would still look to have it done by a very experienced surgeon who uses the da Vinci robot. It's the way of the future and, in my opinion, the way to go. Best of luck, Carol
