Re: Worried about no BM
yes, I had my TAH/BSO on the 15th as well. i didnt have a bm until the 20th. the best thing you can do if possible is get off the pain meds and onto tylenol, motrine, etc. as these are very binding. my doc recommended milk of magnesia and after 2 doses plus prunes it worked like a charm. good luck and feel better soon!

Re: Worried about no BM
Finally it happened. Very painful, but yesterday, day 6 after surgery, I finally had bm. I've read that a lot of you say that Mirilax is good to take. I bought some before my surgery but haven't taken it because I haven't talked to my Dr. about it. Would it be okay to take without getting ahold of my Dr.?

Re: Worried about no BM
I am 2 weeks post-op and I am taking Benefiber and in the evening 3 colace tablets every day. Today I had the worst BM in my live, what is actually the 4th after surgery!!! I called the doctor's office this morning and they told me to take Milk of Magnesia. Thanks god it worked after 1 hour, but it was a nightmare :-)). I also received the hint for hot prune juice in case the Milk of Magnesia doesn't work. Ladies keep in mind: don't stop to take stool softeners and feel on the safe side after your 1st BM. I am doing very fine and walking a lot (had LAVH) and never thought that this happens to me with the 4th BM post-op. When the next BM is not coming tomorrow, I won't wait another 3 days before I take the Milk of Magnesia again, that is really great and tastes not bad.

Re: Worried about no BM
I agree with justme11. my experience has been good some days, going easily after eating, but others are not so easy. my recommendation is the cherry MOM. its yucky but not as bad as the mint flavor. feel good!

Re: Worried about no BM
I am getting constipated again. :-( I am taking 3x3 Benefiber and 3 Colace in the evening. Normally, that should be really enough. I am drinking lots of water and started having 40 minutes walks. I will take the Milk of Magnesia or hot prune juice today again that finally worked.
The disadvantage is, when you take Milk of Magnesia or hot prune juice together with stool softeners you don't need to make any plans for the rest of the day because then it works better than you want....
Did anyone of you also notice a change in your bowel? What I mean, I heard that the bladder can be irritated from the surgery, what was not the case with me, but is it also possible that the bowel is irritated?
Do you think that the Colace works better when distributed over the day instead of taking 3 tablets in the evening?
Any feedback is highly appreciated :-)

Re: Worried about no BM
After 5 days of not going, and taking 4 stool softeners a day, I sat on the toilet for 2 hours and read a book. Finally movement, but it was the worst pain.
Now while I cannot sleep at night I continue my ritual 2 hour book read and eventually something moves.
Cannot wait to get back to "normal" if I even know what that is any more.

Re: Worried about no BM
Hi sleclair,
I know what you are talking about. The key for success foe me is hot prune juice. I never expected that. Meanwhile I tried so many things and stool softeners in high dosage.
I drink half a cup of hot prune juice before I go to bed. I can tell you, in the morning you will be able to have a BM without pain. I really works, it is cheap and natural! The same counts for "Milk of Magnesia" instead of prune juice. I even skipped the stool softeners and it is still working.
It is really worth a try.
Good luck :-)

Re: Worried about no BM
Since coming home this past Sunday (24th) I have been drinking 3 - 8 oz glasses of prune juice a day as well as taking 2 docusate sodium 100 mg tabs each morning. On Tuesday my boss told my hubby to mix 1 cup prune juice, 1 cup applesauce and 1/2 cup of bran. Then have me take 2 tablespoons twice a day. I have had regular, mixed texture (runny with hard stuff) BM 2 or 3 times a day. I am also drinking lots of water and gatorade throughout the day. Maybe as time goes by I can cut back on some of the stuff but considering along with pain meds I am on Iron pills which have a tendancy to bung a person up as well. Thus the suggested from my boss. The thought of eating that stuff kind of grossed me out but it isn't that bad. Take it quick and it's done.
HTH someone.
