Funny feeling heart beat post op...

About 4 weeks after tah/bso I started feeling this little flutter when I breath anywhere from 1 - 10 times per hour. It sort of feels like when you are on a roller coaster and you are going down the big hill and you breath feels like it is briefly being taken away....like you need to take a deep breath all the time of there is a butterfly around your heart. I told my dr. about it at my 6 week check up but he did not seem too concerned....it is now 4 months post op and I have made an appointment with my family practice doctor....I have to see him to get a referral to see a specialist. I started having the hot flashes around the same time the irregular heart beats started.....has anyone else had this? Is this a sign of menopause?

I have had those sensations also and am prone to blood clotting, was afraid it was a clot passing, but my daughter that is a nurse and works in respitory therapy, said it is your body's way of reminding you to breathe deeper and get some more oxygen in your system. So when you feel that way take 10-15 deep respirations or get moving. She also suggested the oxycise videos that teach deeper breathing techniques. Hope your find releif this way I have! (I have an office job where I sit a lot and this has plagues me for quite some time. )

I think you did the right thing by making a doctor's appointment. Breathing and heart arythmias are not something you should self-diagnose. 4 months is a long time to have that kind of symptom. In my experience, surgeons don't always listen to things outside their specialty - he may have brushed it off because it wasn't related to the surgery.

Re: Funny feeling heart beat post op...

i asked my doctor about the funny heart beat at my six weeks check up and he said that can happen because of all that your body has been through and not to worry unless it continues

I have a similar problem. I am 2 weeks post op from a TAH and I have a pain in the middle of my chest (between my breasts). It feels like a big air pocket that I cannot shake. Is this normal too?

Re: Funny feeling heart beat post op...

Thirty...I'm the queen of heart flutters. LOL. Been having them for years now. I have very mild mitral valve regurgitation where blood flows back into the heart a bit. I don't take medication for it or anything but it can be scary. It got worse recently then subdued after my surgery. I have a cardiologist that monitors me from time to time. I would keep an eye on your blood pressure and also medications you are taking. Are you on pain meds? Are you taking hormones? Many factors contribute to heart flutters and sometimes it's just NOTHING. My cardiologist said they are very common. It could also be a sign of peri-menopause. However learn to watch for changes and document when it happens. Mine tends to happen during my monthly periods. It helps to track what triggers it.

I get this all the time too since I have a gastro stomach problem. This sounds like gas trapped in your chest area. If there's no pain spreading to your arms, numbness, dizziness, nausea, then it must be gas. Try some Gas-x for relief. But all in all please always check with your Dr whenever any strange symptoms appear. That's what I do. Better safe than sorry. I heard heart symptoms manifest differently in people.

Thanks for your post....I do not take hormone replacements but I have been on anxiety/depression meds for 13 years. Currently I am taking effexor xr, klonopin, and trazadone. I went to my fp doctor last week and he is having my thyroid checked through blood work and has ordered an ekg, etc. . I have to make the appointments for them this week.

The flutters are not painful at all just funny feeling since I have never had them unless I was coming down a very steep hill on a roller coaster ride and it does not leave me short of breath. I am hoping it is nothing.

I think I read somewhere this could be a symptom of menopause....????
