staple left in
TAH/BSO surgery was 8/24. I had a vertical incision with 29 staples. Staples were removed on 9/8 and a bunch of tape replaced them. the tape strips are finally starting to come off, and I notice that underneath one of the strips a stray staple remains!
should I freak out? 'cause I am.
I have a follow up with the surgeon on Tuesday. should I wait until then, or should I try to take it out myself?

Re: staple left in
Hi Onken!
I think if I were you I might try (using a tweezers) to gently give it a little tug but if it didn't come out easily I would wait until you see your doctor in a couple of days.

Re: staple left in
Agreed - I'd give it a try. I removed stitches from myself once, though, so I probably push it a bit!

Re: staple left in
Sisters,
Surgical staples are not like unused paper staples! They do not just go straight down - they curl under, similar to the way paper staples fold. Pulling at a surgical staple with tweezers is not a good idea. They are not removed that way! The doctor cuts the staple in half and then removes each half in a twisting motion.
Please don't hurt yourself - wait until Tuesday!

Re: staple left in
yup - I figured that out after tugging on it a bit. I put an ice cube on it first so it didn't hurt....at the time. it stings a bit now.
I see my regular gyn tomorrow to talk about hormones, so I will ask if she can do it. otherwise I will wait one more day until I see the oncology surgeon.
thanks for all the replies!

Re: staple left in
I've removed staples from patients, and I would wait for the doctors appointment.

Re: staple left in
Er, yeah. That's what I meant. Are you crazy? Who would remove their own staples?
I probably would have tried it, but hope I'd have enough sense to stop when I encounterd resistance. Some days that's doubtful though.
