Prep Question??

Im having an abdominal hyst. So I would imagine I have to be shaved?? Can I just shave myself and if so do I shave completly?? I hear everyone talking about this bowel prep thing, does this mean all liquid diet the day before surgery, no food??¿ and one more thing I hear people talking about problems sleeping, what causes this. I have no problems sleeping right now, does this mean I will have after surgery?? Is this due to hormone levels or lack of, Im having everything removed.

Prep Question??

I know that the hospital I went to didn't want you to shave yourself, they did a dry shave on me, no chemicals or perfume ready for the op, and it wasn't a full shave, just the top.
The bowel prep is to empty the bowel, either enema or liquid to drink seems to be the go, this is done the day before surgery normally.
As for the sleep, well I too had no problems sleeping before but do now it is just disturbed or I can't get to sleep, I don't know what the cause is, maybe someone else here knows and can shed some light on it!

Prep Question??

Hi teenytine,

From the research I did before my tah/bso, I found out from my doctor that I should not shave because of the possibility of infections. As for bowel preps, this is left up to the individual surgeon's preference. I did not have to do a bowel prep. I was only told to eat lightly the day before surgery because the anesthesia causes our bowels to stop working for a few days and if you eat easily digestible foods, it is easier on the bowels when they do start working again. Be sure to ask your doctor what his preferences are at your pre-op appointment.

I, too, am experiencing insomnia. I'm not sure exactly what is causing it.

Be well,

nmil
