Did I make the right decision about my cervix

Hi I'm new to this forum. My original Hyst was scheduled today but postponed till Dec 10th due to a recall on a piece of the equipment needed to retain the cervix. I am having the da vinci surgery. The doc said we could go ahead with the surgery but would have to remove the cervix. I declined due to never having an abnormal paps and a biopsy was negative and Lord knows I don't want to remove a part of me because a recall on a machine! I'm having a hyst due to 5 fibroids and excessively long periods. I think there's one week (if I don't have sex) that I don't spot or bleed. But anyways, that's getting into a different topic, anyways, I am chosing to keep the cervix for I don't want to risk any problems with "support" of my other organs or sexual problems. I hope I made the right decision. Any input would be appreciated

Re: Keep cervix?

I'm with you on this one. I am keeping mine even though I have had abnormal paps in the past. I haven't had an abnormal in a while, so I'm not too worried about that. I am more worried about the risk of problems with "support" and sexual issues.

Re: Did I make the right decision about my cervix

Hi Jojo70, and

I had a vaginal hysterectomy and therefore had to lose my cervix. I haven't noticed any difference in terms of support or sexual response--but perhaps that's because the cervix had been painful during sex and I'm happier with it gone. I am happy to not have to deal with mini-periods like some women do when they keep the cervix.

I think it's very empowering to be able to make a decision like this for yourself. Every choice I made in regards to my hysterectomy made me feel stronger and more ready for the surgery.

Re: Did I make the right decision about my cervix

I had them take my cervix because I didn't want a chance of mini periods nor did I want them to have to go back in there for problems later. I read here that fibroids can grow on the cervix so you might want to research that, if that is why you are having the surgery to begin with. It is a very personal decision & what is right for one might not be right for the other. I have had no problems with it being gone at all. For me sex is even better because he is not bumping up against the cervix anymore. I am glad it is gone. Best wishes.

Re: Did I make the right decision about my cervix

So if I have an LAVH, I have to have my cervix removed because it's a vaginal procedure?

Re: Did I make the right decision about my cervix

Hi jojo!

I can't tell you if you are making the right decision for you, but I can share my experience and see if it helps!

The cervix is the neck of the uterus, and not a separate organ. Hence, mine was removed with the rest of the uterus as my whole uterus was affected by my endometriosis. I am nine years post op (today!) and I have not had one problem with not having it! My pelvic support is fine, sex has been fine, vaginal moisture is fine, etc.!

That doesn't mean having yours removed is right for you, but I have been fine without it!

The LAVH is a lap assisted vaginal hysterectomy so the complete uterus, with cervix, is delivered vaginally.
