Re: lower back pain running down my legs

I had this same problem...still do sometimes. Here's what I found:

When lying on your back in bed, put a pillow under your knees. I use a memory foam type pillow because it holds its shape better than a regular pillow & continues to support all night. If I do this, the next morning I am pain free. Any time I need to relieve the pain, I go lie down like this for 30 minutes to an hour. Does the trick every time.

Sometimes I position the pillow further up my thighs, but the result is the same. It's not always easy to sleep this way, but it's worth it!

Re: lower back pain running down my legs

Cella,
It may something unrelated to your surgery. Low back pain radiating to legs could be a pinched nerve or bulging disk in your back. Heat or ice packs, and strengthening your abs(when you are all healed!), and stretching your back (look on line for exercises) should help. But I would see the doctor, who will prob order at least an x ray to get to the root of your pain.
Good luck!

Re: lower back pain running down my legs

luvtocook is right...it may be unrelated to all the other stuff going on so having it checked out is best.

One thing I forgot to put in my post about the pillow was to roll it or fold it in half under your knees. It was also recommended to me to sleep with a pillow between my knees to relieve the pressure causing the pain. That didn't work as well for me but works perfectly for others. My point is that a firm pillow can be your best friend for relieving your back pain...you just have to adjust it till you can find what works for you.

And I highly recommend a giant teddy bear for post-op! As my surgery was on Valentine's Day my children bought me a teddy who was nearly as big as me. When I got home from the hospital I couldn't lie flat because it hurt my abdomen. I tried the bed chair pillow but it didn't support my lower back. Solution: I slept in the arms of my teddy for a week. His big belly supported me in just the right way!

Awww, that's so sweet of them. My DH is getting us a new bed that should be arriving in the next few weeks and we're finally getting a headboard so that I can be propped up a bit.

Re: lower back pain running down my legs

I also suffer from on/off back pain, and in December it kind of went wild on me -- couldn't stand at work without being in pain, and it even began to affect walking and sitting. I have extremely large fibroids and naturally blamed it on them and the displacement they are causing down there. I coped by sitting on a back massage chair pad in the evenings (it vibrates and gets warm) and adding some upper body exercises for my arms and back muscles, plus a few abdominal exercises to strengthen those. Back pain after a few weeks of training (twice a week) diminished almost 100%. It's worth the extra time it takes to do the exercises to get the relief!

Re: lower back pain running down my legs

Actually, my pcp said she had a friend who had severe lower back pain that magically disappeared after her fibroids were removed via hyster. But Cellabella has already had the hyst. So that wouldn't be the solution.

I did weeks of PT with no relief of my low back pain. Then I had it injected (actually have had it injected 4 times in the past year) for a herniated disc, with almost complete relief.
Ahhhh... modern medicine
