Question about post-op?
I'm 27 and having a vaginal hysterectomy on September 30th due to uterine prolapse. I leave on October 8th for a week at the shore, some rest and relaxation with my husband, kids, and other family. I was just wondering how other people felt after a week or two? We're not doing much while there. I was hoping to have the surgery in August, but Sept. 30th was the closest they could do and I didn't feel like waiting any longer than that. At least I will have people to help me at the shore, if we were at home everyone would be working. I have been reading this site a lot and this is my first time posting. I haven't seen much about how people feel this soon after surgery so I figured I'd ask. Thanks and good luck with everyones recovery

Question about post-op?
It's the travel part I would really worry about. We all heal at our own pace. I would ask your doctor.

Question about post-op?
I had a TAH also. The first week, I had to rest the most and lie down quite a bit. I noticed myself getting around better the 2nd week and able to stay up longer. Walking each day helped my healing to go well. Rest and relaxation definitely helped me to heal. So if that is what you can get at the shore, then maybe you should go. I don't know how far it is for you to travel there, I personally was unable to handle too long of a time in the car for the first two weeks, but Everyone is different in their healing. My personal experience has not been that difficult.

Question about post-op?
Hi, I had a tah/bso and would not have up to a trip anywhere at just a week or so. I've heard that healing can be quicker with a vaginal hyst but that's still very early in the recovery. I think that you should didcuss your plans with your dr and follow his/her advice. You have only the one chance to heal properly
Best wishes.

Question about post-op?
It doesn't take us too long to get there, about 1 1/2 hours. Best wishes for your surgery this Friday

Question about post-op?
A co-worker of mine did the same, went to her cottage to relax for a week after surgery. She went for the 2nd week of her recovery. She seemed to do just fine. I think the drive will be the hardest. And make sure everyone knows how much you will be relaxing.

Question about post-op?
If the DR says it's ok...just remember to take a little pillow to put between your belly and the seatbelt..take a painkiller before you go..and kick the seat back so you're reclining instead of sitting all the way up. That should help alot.
I have my LAVH and the 2nd week I went to the store with DH and that got me thru the drive there and home.
Hugz n best wishes!

Question about post-op?
Okiley,
I had TAH, but I seem to remember some previous posts from women who had vaginal hysterectomies who said they had trouble sitting for extended periods of time. If that is the case, you might want to consider a donut pillow for the trip. Perhaps some of the sisters who had vaginal hysters can elaborate.
As for the 90-minute drive, I had to see my doctor one week post to have my staples removed, and that's a 45-minute trip one way. I had no problem riding in the passenger's seat for that length of time. Just be sure you stop as necessary to get out and stretch your legs and you should be fine. That is, IF your doctor says the trip is ok.
Best wishes,
Rene

Question about post-op?
I think some other posters are confused about the type of surgery you are having, or am I confused? Some mention they've had the same surgery (TAH) - but you are having a vag hyst - right?
To me, a TAH requires an abd incision, whereas a vag hyst requires no abd incision - hence the recovery would be slightly different - IMO.
I had a LAVH - my privates were very, very sore, but my abd was not - that made it easier for me to get up and down, out of bed, off the couch, etc.. However, sitting for long periods of time can be very painful. I would worry about the drive to the cottage. You can bring your inflatable donut, but you will probably need to take a few breaks to walk and stretch your legs. I found it best lying on my side, completely off of my bum.
My wedding anniversary was yesterday, I am 11 days post op - my husband and I went out to dinner, I made sure the benches were cushioned (at the restaurant's website) - but I could only sit for an hour - no dessert and no coffee (which I usually do when we go out) - I couldn't wait to get home and get my stretchy shorts on and lie on my side.
Also, company can be too much. I had a lot of visitors to my home the week after my surgery, but even though I may have looked like I was getting along ok, I was so tired and hurting after a little while, so make sure your family/friends understand you may need to lie down often during the day. Find a peaceful, quiet room to make your own retreat if you need to get away. You will need it! Especially if your bowels decide to finally work at an awkward time - and you will be happy when they decide to work again - trust me!
Good luck and good recovery to you - hope I helped!

Question about post-op?
I had a TVH on June 22, and by 9 days out was ready to escape the house. I drove myself to the local coffee shop for lunch and was amazed at how "hard" the seats were and how much I felt every turn and bump in the road on the way there. After an hour out, I needed a nap. I guess the main frustration I had after this surgery was how dad-gum tired I was after seemingly doing "nothing." Too much activity also really made my abdomen area and lower back hurt. I know I would not have been ready for an hour and a half ride to anywhere. That being said, you are also 10 years younger than me (lol!), so you may do just fine. Also, everybody is different, but I remember having horrible gas pains that first week or two and having difficulty going to the bathroom. My bladder didn't work right and neither did my bum! I just really needed some "alone" time for privacy and recovery, and because I didn't feel great, I wasn't really up to visiting for very long. Don't get me wrong, the whole experience was not nearly as horrible and debiliating as I imagined it would be, but it was still difficult to go through those first two weeks, especially the first week. I would also base my travel decision on my doctors advice, and on how helpful, supportive and understanding, I thought my family and friends going on the same trip will be. I know that first two weeks, I had to take pain pills on a regular basis, so if you decide to go be sure to let everyone know that you're just not up to your normal activity level, and you'd love to be pampered. It could be a wonderful opportunity for them to show you how much they can love and care for you. I know you will make the right decision for you. I just wanted to share what my experience was that first two weeks out. By the way, now that I'm one day shy of 6-weeks, I feel fabulous!!!! Good luck to you in September!
