Anyone return to hospital because they couldn"t walk?

8 days after very successful vaginal hysterectomy (one day after getting an A+ on my bladder retention post op test) I awoke at 7am and found I could stand, but couldn't bend my knees to walk. As if my feet were glued to the floor. I also had some involuntary jerking of my legs and wrists. Was advised to call 911. After 10 hours in hospital w/no pain meds I finally recovered ability to walk. Narcotic related?

Oh my gosh! Scary! I am so sorry this happened to you! Did the Drs have any ideas as far as the cause? Did you have a spinal? Weird.

how aweful-I hope you follow up with your own personal Dr. and this never happens again.

How scary. I wonder if it was some kind of temporary nerve damage from swelling or something.

If it isn't narcotic related, I would think that it may be because of nerve irritation or damage.

If you are standing and walking now, I would not think much about it. The body sometimes takes time to heal.

On the other hand, if you are having difficulty walking, and experiencing twitches and jerks involuntarily, this may be neurological.

I say this from experience.
I have had nerve irritation. An MRI ruled out direct nerve damage from a nick or a compression, but I have had difficulty standing up straight, standing after lying down for a nap or night sleep, getting up after sitting for longer periods than 10 or 15 minutes. At first after getting up from bed, I had to steady myself by holding on to the dresser. My legs were downright "wobbly" and weak.

My condition has finally improved, as we found out that my brisk walking and running were aggravating my back and legs.
Now they are weak, but less so, I can stand up straight, there is less twitching of my legs, and I am no longer "wobbly."

My gyn/oncologist was perplexed as to what it could be. After several months, it still didn't go away, so I insisted on a neuro consult. The neurologist said that it was due to a previous bad back, but that the surgery lying position made the back problem worse. To add more, I started running and walking a lot, and this aggravated it even more.

I now slowly walk 30-40 minutes a day, then I swim for an hour.
I feel myself getting better. I hope so, because neurological surgery is way to risky to try at this point.

I want to to get early treatment. Please ask for a neurology consult.

Hi (((MiriamM))) What medications were you on at home when this happened? The symptoms you describe can be a rare side effect of an overdose of anti-inflammatory medications, though I have not heard of them happening from narcotics. What did the doctors tell you the cause was?

My daughter was 8 & had tonsils removed. She was on Tylenol w/codine. Had a very similar experience. She was allergic to the codine. Spent 3 days in hospital because not only her joints but also muscles (ie: LUNGS) were also affected. Life threatening situation.
