Traveling at 9 wks?

Before I knew I was going to have to have surgery, hubby and I had planned our anniversary trip to Ireland in January. I am 2 1/2 weeks post op now and will be 9+ weeks at time of trip. Although I am still sore, I feel pretty good most of the time.

Am I crazy to take this trip? My dr. is fine with it, he actually moved my surgery up to the 11/17 from 12/5 so that I would have longer to recover before the trip.

FYI had TAH due to large fibroid, left ovary & tube remaining.

Traveling at 9 wks?

Hello Marsh,
Where are you travelling from? What kind of travel are we talking about?
I am nearly 9 weeks post-op from a SAH and vaginal repairs and I could travel as long as I took it easy, and I wouldn't plan on doing too much when you are there. Have plenty of rests built in and decide before-hand that this will be a 'gentle' holiday, and not a sight-seeing 100-mile-an-hour job. That way you won't feel pressure to push yourself too far.

Traveling at 9 wks?

We'll be flying from FL to Boston a few days ahead and stay with family before the longer (5 hr) flight to Shannon. Then we plan on driving from place to place with some walking. We have no set itinerary so we can go as easy as we want. Going for a week.

I don't swell much now so don't expect such in another 7 weeks. Am I right?

I'll have another dr appt a few weeks before the trip so I guess I'll be certain that I'm good to go at that point.

Traveling at 9 wks?

Hi,
I took a trip at 7 weeks to AZ, it was a 5 1/2 flight for me with my BF. It was great and much needed for FUN before my return to work at 8 weeks. I even managed to walk for 3 hours one of the days. But some nights I needed to get to bed early, or take a rest during the day. It helps if you're itinerary is flexible so you can rest when you need to, and if you're doing fine now you should be doing well on the trip as long as you don't overdue things between now and then. Have a blast in Ireland. I've always wanted to go there too.

Traveling at 9 wks?

This Christmas we were going to go to my daughter's, a 6 hour car journey. I said I wouldn't be up to it and know full well I couldn't do it, but that's just me. A friend went to Ireland 10 weeks after her hysterectomy and said it was fine. Although she walked up Blarney castle she didn't lean backwards to kiss the Blarney stone!

If you are feeling good now then there is no reason to think that you won't be by then.

I agree with the others that you should keep your itinerary flexible and include frequents rests in between activities.

I have always wanted to go to Ireland! I hope that you are able to go and have a wonderful time!

Best Wishes to you!

Traveling at 9 wks?

My husband and I traveled to Kauai 7 weeks after my TVH. The trip from Minneapolis to Honolulu was 9 hours nonstop. It was a long time to sit down, but I made sure to get up every so often and walk around. The worst thing was walking through the big airports with my wheeled carry-on and a backpack. I got very, very tired and everyone was getting rather peeved with me having to stop and rest. It's amazing how people think because you don't have any "external healing" to do that you should be fine and up to par in no time. I was tired during the trip, but I think it was more from the time difference than my actual surgery. Other than that the trip was an amazing success and just what I needed to help aid in my "mental" healing! Good luck and enjoy your time away! I hear it's gorgeous there!!! Meri

Traveling at 9 wks?

I flew from Toronto to Paris 7 weeks post op and toured for 2 weeks. I was tired at night for sure. I had felt pretty good. A week after my holdiday I started to bleed and have had to have a second surgery, so be careful and DO NOT pick up your luggage ( I wonder if that is what I did to start bleeding).

Traveling at 9 wks?

Hi Marsh-
I am scheduled to travel the end of this week at 9 weeks post-op (TVH, Cysto & Rectocles, Fibroids) for a 2 1/2 hr flight to attend a graduation, but I am NOT allowed to lift any luggage or anything over 10 lbs. I am allowed to roll one suitcase behind me, but I'm leaving that job to my DH.
I'm happy to leave the cold and get warm for 3 days. Feeling well now and we have a light itinerary scheduled, so I'm up for it. I felt a big improvement between the 7th and 8th week and now I can sit comfortably for long periods of time, unlike before. Hope you have a wonderful trip - you deserve it.
