What I found the most helpful at the Castle
Because my admittance date got shifted up by a day with zero warning, I was running around like a headless chicken packing that morning. I'd limited myself to one suitcase (carryon size) plus purse, and I tossed in things I thought I'd find useful since I had the spare room.
I am very very very very glad I brought my robe. Brand new silk robe, with sash. I had enough tubing on my IV I could wear the robe normally instead of having one arm uncovered, and having the robe on helped me feel dashing and pretty, instead of like an extra for a zombie movie.
Lip balm. Dry lips not good.
Skin lotion - in my case, cocoa butter. The ocassional dab of lotion on an unhappy or overheated bodypart felt so very very very good. My post-op room had no AC, and I'm very heat intolerant. Wet washcloths helped in that regard too, but the cocoa butter made me smell like a cookie, which made me giggle which made me feel better ^_^
Helping hands. In this case, people not items. Nurses and nursing assistants, unless you're really lucky, do not have time to devote to their patients. Having someone around to babysit me made a huge difference for me. Extra hands to help rearrange pillows, flip pillows, steady while entering/departing bed, ect. I recruited friends and family, and warned them it would be boring work and I likely wouldn't be entertaining, but I would deeply appreciate the help. I'm glad I did it.
Stuff I packed and never used: Personal fan (both my rooms had a fan already), toiletries (4 days/3 nights, no showers or baths), my own slippers.
