Bio-identical hormones - does anyone have experience with this
I am experiencing some intense menopause issues, night sweats, insomnia, freezing during the day, foggy brain etc. I meet with my surgeon tomorrow to talk about HRT and a woman I met today suggested bio-identical hormones. I know my surgeon will not likely support it, but I want to know my options.
Has anyone had any experience with this type of treatment?

Re: Bio-identical hormones - does anyone have experience with this
I've been using bio-identical vaginal cream, and topical gel, Estrace and Elestrin, respectively. My gyno/surgeon gave me samples at my six-week post-op check, and a prescription for refills on the topical gel. I've been using both since the end of December and my hot flashes have ceased, no night sweats, able to sleep at night. Why do you think your surgeon wouldn't support their use in your case? My gyno said the vag cream was short-term to help with the remaining post-op healing pains, as she explained it without estrogen the tissues were drying and shrinking too rapidly, and that the topical gel was for long-term help with the hot flashes and I could experiment with dosages as I continued through the post surgical menopause. I've had no problems with either, the pain is gone, the swelly belly is gone, and the hot flashes are gone. But, I've no history of breast cancer in my family, which may be a deciding factor against HRT in many women.

I have been using bio-identical hormone replacement for years and it has been a life saver for me. I get tiny pellets inserted under the skin in the hip area every 3 months. I would, however, make sure you go to a doctor who is certifed in this type of HRT. Good luck!

Re: Bio-identical hormones - does anyone have experience with this
I'm on bio-identical estrogen; started 4 days post-op. It has been a God-send. No more hot flashes!
There are certain risk factors for any HRT, which you need to discuss with your doctor. I know that high blood pressure and high cholesterol are among them. However, for some people (myself included), HRT actually reduces the risk of certain conditions to which we are prone, including osteoporosis and colo-rectal cancer. If you've had your ovaries removed, then you don't need to consider progesterone, which is the hormone that increases your risk for breast cancer.
It has to be an individual decision that you talk over with your doctor to determine your own health history and concerns. Good luck with the conversation with your doctor!
