Excrutiating back pain
I am pre-op for a TAH and bladder sling on Feb 22nd. I have fibroids with a 5 month uterus. In addition to the incontenence, I am now experiencing excrutiating back pain. The day starts out fine, I am limber and able to do about anything except, I am so stiff I can't reach my toes to put my socks on. I then commute 1 hour to work. I have an office job so, either I am at the desk doing computer work or in long meetings. By noon I can barely get out of a chair I am so stiff and sore. I force myself to get up and take a walk at least once an hour thorughout the day. By time the day is done, I can not get out of my chair, my husband drives an hour to come get me at work. He helps me out of the chair and walk to the car (very slow and agonizing). I am taking Robaxacet for the pain and to relax muscles. By time I get home, my husband has to undress me, get me ready for bed and gives me dinner in bed.
I can not sit-up to read or watch tv once in bed. A heating pad and sleeping pills and I am out till morning and it starts all over the next day. Once agin, I feel great in the morning.
My doctor says its the tilted uterus and fibroids causing the pain. I must say I am a little skeptical. On the other hand it will be great if it all goes away with the TAH.
So my question....has anyone had any similar dibilitating back pain?
Looking for answers,
Thanks everyone for your support.

excruciating back pain
I have similar pain Mine is from herniated discs And the pain is made worse by the adenomyosis and large uterus. If you still have the pain after a few months ask your dr to schedule an MRI Hopefully your insurance should cover it. I hope you feel better, and the pain goes away with your surgery. My surgery is 5 days later I will pray for you and see you on the other side.

re chiro and herniated discs....
I have seen a chiro religiously for about the last 15 years. This is not an alignment issue. I wish it were that easy. I am not aware of herniated discs, can you tell me more about what they are and the symptoms.
Is there something you do to aleviate the condition?

Excrutiating back pain
Herniated discs are when the nucleus of yor spinal thoracic or cervical discs slip out They are sometimes referred to as slipped disk. The pain is excruciating I also have nerve damage because the disc is compressing the nerve. Your chiropractor could probably explain it to you better for that is their specialty I have many symptoms because I have three spinal and two cervical}neck herniations. The symptoms pertain to where the herniation is. The symptoms of nerve damage are pain radiating down my left side of the body and pins and needles off and on I dont want to go into to much detail I dont want to scare you. I was told when it first happened to use ice to bring down the swelling Then when it felt better to use moist heat I purchased a thermophore brand through my chiropractors office. He adjusts my spine and uses electrical stimulation. I know that this will sound funny but walk as much as you can and take breaks in between activities. Everything I read says to stay active with back pain but also to take it easy and dont strain. Ask your chiropractor for a list of exercises that you can do for it one that I do is to while laying down pull your knees up to your chest and strech your back hope this helps. sorry so long.

ps ask your dr after surgery if you can do these exercises you dont want to hurt yourself.

Excrutiating back pain
I certainly understand and empathize with you regarding your back pain. I hope that the surgery will bring you a great deal of relief.
I had back surgery last year due to a torn disk, after 9 months of PT, 4 cortisone injections, etc. I've done well from the surgery, but am still having problems most likely do to my enlarged uterus.
My physical therapist from the very beginning said she suspected something gynecological going on that was contributing to my back symptoms. The disk tear was a real issue, but there has been something else. Once I started recovering from the surgery and progressing in my strength and mobility, the connection between my period and back pain became glaringly obvious.
I used to only get the excruciating back pain during my period. In the recent months I have a 4-5 day spotting/cramping warm up to my period and get back pain with that too. Then, most recently my back pain never really goes away. It lets up, but doesn't go away. I'm back to this stinkin' chronic pain cycle and I'm so depressed about it.
So, I'm waiting on my surgery date and am totally confident that this will relieve me of this final bit of pain. Perhaps THEN I can finally progress with my back fully and get on with life. I've been in a holding pattern for so long it's hard to patient for a few more months.
Anyway, hang in there, think positive thoughts, pray (if you're the believing sort), and have faith that this surgery will help with your back pain. I agree with someone else's post that you might want to consider a back MRI just to rule out a specific disk problem, which could be exacerbated by the enlarged uterus. Ugh...no fun!!!
My thoughts are with you!

Thank you all for your replies....
Based on what I have seen and read here, I am hopefull that the TAH will prvide some relief to the back-pain. But as a realist I have contact my GP and he has since ordered x-rays and an MRI to ensure there aren't any other issues going on with my back. In the meantime, he has perscribed a muscle relaxant and anti-inflamatory.
Thank you all again, your willingness to share has given me focus and untimately some relief.
Take care....

Excrutiating back pain
jj33 I hope your back pain is just what the dr thought. I wouldnt wish this pain on anyone. sorry I didnt get back to you sooner I got stuck at my moms house because the roads were too icy to navigate last night. If you are afraid of small spaces ask your doctor to give you a valium for the test and ask the technition to cover your eyes for the test. I hope your tests turn out negative and you get better after your surgery, Good luck, and I am keeping you in my prayers
Donna
PS ont forget to check the list of medications not to take before surgery.
