how soon can I ski???

I am scheduled for a vaginal hysterectomy (leaving ovaries) for cervical carcinoma in situ recurrence on Thursday, 12/11.

My question is, my husband really wants to take a family ski trip, and the kids have a few days off of school in January. This will be 5 weeks after my surgery...is there any chance I might be able to ski? I realize it depends how everything goes, and my Dr will have to have the final say, but I wanted to ask the experts your opinions!

Thank you so much. This site has relieved much of my anxiety-

I strongly doubt it but you should be okay to go along with them as long as you have somewhere you can get rest. You may not be cleared for full activity until 6 weeks post op and even then you will still tire very easily. Be sure to ask your doctor about it and he should let you know exactly what he expects your restrictions to be.

Please read up on teh preop hints and articles and the post op ones to get some ideas of what you can and can't do after surgery.

I agree with Stampincat.... youu probably won't feel up to skiing, but you should be able to manage going along (but don't let your family expect you to do EVERYTHING while they are out having fun on the slopes.

If you are in fantastic shape and you are a ski bunny you might feel up to it...... however, your doctor might not think it is a good idea ---- even the best skier can take a tumble ... or worse, have someone slam into them!!! yikes!

I remember at about 3 weeks I went to the supermarket and I was TERRIFIED that someone would nudge me with their cart.... I would have been a basket case on the slopes!

I hope you find a good way to enjoy your holiday

Hi! Good luck with your surgery. I am 12 days post-op, LAVH for large fibroid (size of a football). I went to my doctor for a tummy check yesterday and am scheduled for a final clearance on January 6th (will be about 5 1\2 weeks post-op). I too am an avid skiier and plan on skiing immediately after. My doctor said he doesn't see why not as long as I continue to progressas I have. At 12 days post-op, I can definately see myself skiing in 3-4 weeks. I had an abdominal surgery years ago (I was 16 yrs old, now 40) for endometriosis and it still hurts when I think about it. By comparison, the LAVH has been a piece of cake. I had some pain for the first day or two after surgery. Have been very mobile since then and feel wonderful. While we still need the same time as our sisters that have abdominal surgeries for internal healing, the LAVH normally cuts down recovery time by about 2 weeks (per my doctor and much research). Instead of 6 to 8 weeks, I was told 4-6 weeks.

After surgery drink, drink, drink and walk (slowly, easily) frequently. Most importantly take it easy. Don't lift, push, pull or nudge with your body or legs to move things (all advice from my doctor). All of these things will help your recovery, and avoid setbacks. Take of yourself and good luck!!!!!
