Four days post-op - Da Vinci hyst and BSO
I had a Da Vinci robot assisted TLVH and BSO this past Thurs 12/18. I was in surgery 4 hours because my left ovary was stuck to my left ureter due to endometriosis and they had to call in a surgical oncologist to pry it apart. What I remember is waking up in recovery with a nurse at my feet on the computer. I was slightly nauseated and in some pain in my pelvic region and my rectum hurt. She immediately put something in my IV to take the edge off, Toradol I believe. My mouth was incredibly dry so I was given ice chips. I was awake but groggy. My hubby and sis were there and after I was stable they transferred me to my room. Everything is pretty foggy about those first few hours in my room. I remember my cute doctor coming in and saying he knew my surgery was going to be difficult but it was worse than he thought but he was happy to report it went well and he was pleased.
The nausea remained throughout the first night, but I didn't vomit. I kept eating ice chips and that helped. I remember around 12:30 am I asked the aide to get me up and let me walk. I'm a physical therapist and I know the importance of getting up and moving asap, so although I didn't feel like it, I forced myself. Didn't walk far but at least got up and out of bed for a bit. I really didn't have that much pain because I'm sure the anesthetics they used during surgery were still in effect.
By morning I was starting to feel human again. The catheter had to be left in due to the surgery on my ureter so at least I didn't have to worry about going pee. My pain was controlled by Toradol in the IV and Percocet or oxycodone by mouth. I started have the gas pains the next day. The gas would make it's way down my intestinal tract but would not pass so that was uncomfortable. It also went in the other direction and made my right shoulder hurt. I had to stay an extra day in the hospital because my hysto was a bit complicated and they wanted to keep an eye on me.
I came home on Sat. 12/20 morning. Laid pretty low the first day and then Sunday morning my sister came over and helped me shower. Boy did that feel good.
I am now 4 days post op and still pretty uncomfortable but not unbearable. The worst part is the gas pains. UGH. They come and go at random. Usually they are the worst when I first wake up. Walking and moving seem to help the most. And as a lot of folks say, hot tea and Gas X. I also use a homeopathic remedy called magnesium phosphorica. It is for abdominal cramping but seems to help with the gas too. I had my first BM today and it was not nearly as painful as I thought it would be. The gas is what is the killer and I understand this can last awhile. Tonight I woke my DH up at 1am and said I need to go to the ER I can't take the pain. But as I walked around a bit and prayed and stuck my tushy in the air I finally was able to pass the gas and feel oh so much better.
At any rate, everyone's body is different and each procedure is a little different. Hopefully you will sail through it all and although it's still major surgery and there will be pain involved, I'm hoping you have a non eventful recovery and feel great in no time. God bless you.

I had the shoulder gas pain, too. The first thing I remember waking up in the recovery room was asking "why does my shoulder hurt?" I had a bit of abdominal discomfort, but nothing excruciating. The morphine took care of that, but didn't do anything for my shoulder. I had to make sure I laid in the hospital bed where it didn't put pressure on my shoulder, but once I started getting out of bed and walking, it dissapated. I remember quite a bit of that day, the morphine didn't make me loopy or anything, but it did make me nauseated when I overdid it. My family said I was very alert, more so than my sister was after having the same surgery. But I was very tired, too, until that night and then I couldn't sleep. All in all, my experience wasn't that bad. I felt much better than I anticipated I would.
It's different for everyone.

I think I might have been cross-eyed for the first half a day after the aneasthetic. I was seeing double for ages, bumping into things everytime I reached for something on my tray table. DH said my eyes were pointing all the wrong way. Never had that experience before, but given I was in bed and not expected to do much so it really wasnt a big deal.... I just closed one eye if I really needed to see something!
