Endometrial ablation: What can I expect?
Hi, I was scheduled for a laprascopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy, leaving my ovaries. The doctor offered me an option of an endometrial ablation as an alternative for now...I have a semi large fibroid and two or three smaller ones. My question is what can I expect from an ablation? Effectiveness, pain recovery...will I be under general anesthetic .etc. I was nervous about having a hysterectomy and I am also nervous about the ablation too. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!! D

Whilst you’re waiting for replies, you may wish to visit the Endometrial Ablation Discussion Group where you'll find dedicated pre- and post-ablation support, plus a far more balanced overview in terms of results.
With regard to effectiveness, as a hysterectomy support website we only tend to see negative ablation experiences since all those with successful outcomes most likely won't have the need to join us for hysterectomy support.
We're sending positive thoughts for your procedure!

Re: Endometrial ablation: What can I expect?
I had the Novasure ablation in January 2016. I also had multiple fibroids. Yes you will be under general anesthesia, I've heard others have it without, but mine was outpatient surgery. Took about :45 minutes. Not a lot of pain, mild cramps, some watery, bloody discharge for about 5 weeks. I only bused Motrin for pain. Not a lot, but it's the uterus healing. Think 3rd degree burn. Unfortunately it did not work for my heavy periods. I was right back to a heavy, clotty flow within 6 weeks.
My next step was the Laproscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy in July of this year. Taking my uterus and Fallopian tubes. My ovaries and cervix were okay to leave. Normal, pap smears and no cysts or anything on ovaries.
Are you also having a D&C, plus a hysteroscope? They tend to do all 3 with the ablations. My doctor took a sample to rule out any cancers.

Endometrial ablation: What can I expect?
Thank you for your reply Beach bum 16. I am supposed to have the D & and hystercope as well. I am wondering how effective this procedure will be as my periods before taking the pill were hellish. I have been taking the pill for nearly 18 years and the doctor says it is time for me to stop for multiple reasons one being that the hormones are making the tumor (s) grow. I am aware that I might still be facing a hysterectomy within months if this intervention proves less than successful!!

Re: Endometrial ablation: What can I expect?
I truly believe the success rate for women with fibroids is 50/50. This is what my doctor thought also. According to him, he got a "good burn". Unfortunately my uterus had other ideas! Lol. At least you have a plan. Research on this website. It helped alleviate many of my fears and apprehensions. This was my first inpatient surgery. I had never stayed in a hospital. But the ladies on here were nothing short of wonderful with encouragement and support! Best of luck to you. I am here to answer any questions.
