Hospital stay...times so different?
Hi,
I have been reading with interest the amount of time that people have been told that they will need to stay in hospital. i am having a verginal hyst and have been told that it is at least three days hospital stay. As I am not in america i presume that is just the way things are done here, we are british living in UAE. I am glad of the stay as i would prefer to have medical people around me for a couple of days. can anyone tell me why it seems such a short stay in the states?

Re: Hospital stay...times so different?
I would imagine it's to cut down on costs, which is why they push us out the door. I am having a TVH on Friday and my dr told me that they usually do a 23 hour observation. So I get to stay the night in the hospital, but should be out just before 24 hours are up. The whole thing is considered outpatient for most people. I am having my dr admit me though so I might be there just over 24 hours, because I have a secondary insurance but they only pay if I am actually admitted, not just there for observation. The only real difference though is that the paperwork is filed differently but my care and length of stay should be about the same.

Re: Hospital stay...times so different?
Hi, I had a TLH and I'm same as the above. 23 hours. Insurance reasons. I went into surgery on a thursday at 730 am and left the hospital about the same time the next day. I think it stinks personally. It is all about the insurance here in the states. They want to push u out th e door asap

Re: Hospital stay...times so different?
we have to have insurance here too but they are fairly good and if the doctor says you have to stay the insurance go along with it. Although they do take weeks to make the final decision and only pay a percentage of the cost.
isn't it sad that in America the insurance think more about the money than the care. i thought maybe my doctor was being overcautious.
Did you cope ok with going home early?
i am worried about coping after the hospital stay!!

Re: Hospital stay...times so different?
OTOH, some of us hate being in the hospital passionately and have good support at home. I was supposed to be in for three nights for my TAH, but felt good, had good vitals and went home after two nights.
Years ago, after having my daughter, between having some minor complications and the fact that she had to stay in a few days longer due to being a premie, the hospital let me stay in an extra night.
The bottom line is that hospitals, sometimes, can be flexible depending on the situation.

Re: Hospital stay...times so different?
I just had a TAH and stayed in the hospital for 5 days. I ran a fever so Doctor kept me that long. It is good because I live alone and it was good to have the staff take care of me for the first five days. I have family and friends stop by all day but it is different being home. I am happy to be home though now to recover.

Re: Hospital stay...times so different?
With so many different insurance providers, they all have their own guidelines. My doctor told me my insurance pre-approved for four nights, but that barring a complication it was very unlikely I would need that. (However, had I not had good support at home, I probably would have stayed the four nights just for my own peace of mind.)
My understanding is that most insurance companies generally don't pre-approve more than two nights, but that if there is valid medical reason for the stay to be extended, it is generally not an issue.

Re: Hospital stay...times so different?
For both of my surgeries, I had a 2 night / 3 day stay.
If I needed to stay another day, I would have. It was not a question of insurance or pushing me out the door by any means. My doctor made the call based on whether or not I was hitting my milestones.
On Tuesday, I didn't think I would ever get out of there (bad gas pains). But they did a great job taking care of it quickly and that evening all of a sudden I started hitting everything and I was good to go home Wed afternoon.
It was sooo much easier recovering at home without being hooked up to machines, woken up by an IV beeping or to have blood drawn at 3am, or the drain emptied, etc.
I received excellent care, but there's nothing like being at home!!

Re: Hospital stay...times so different?
I dealt fine with going home next day.. actually the doctor that discharged me said his patients don't even stay overnight. > To answer your question, I felt better at home, not sure why- but I did. Good luck to you honey.
