Will My Ovaries Fail?
Hi
I am scheduled for a hysterectomy on Feb 25/03 - for DUB, anemic, flooding for last 13 years. Reading the post on this site are leading me to believe that even if I keep my ovaries, which I am (and also cervix) my ovaries will fail anyway and I will be facing a whole new set of problems. I am 39, have a good sex life and am really worrie about this. Is it just a choice of "which set of problems" I am willing to live with??
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Emma Christine

Will My Ovaries Fail?
Hi
There is no way to predict if a person's ovaries will or will not fail after a hysterectomy. I didn't keep mine, but I hope some who did keep their ovaries will be along to let you know how they're doing.
Best wishes.

Will My Ovaries Fail?
I had a TAH four years ago and kept both ovaries and they are still going strong. Other friends kept ovaries and are doing well.
If you have take one ovary when you have a hyst there is a SLIGHTLY higher risk that the other will fail in five years, but this increased risk does not apply if you have both.

Will My Ovaries Fail?
There is not way to predict if the ovaries will fail after a hysterectomy. I had my surgery about 2 years ago (uterus and cervix removed). I kept both ovaries. So far, both have continued to function and I have not needed any hormone therapy.

I am your age, had an SAH, kept ovaries. They are working fine, I noticed NO changes after surgery, and my doctor does not expect them to fail any time soon.

Hello...
Welcome to hystersisters!
I had an SAH last April and kept one ovary (left). The right ovary had been removed before the SAH. My left ovary is working fine...I haven't had any problems with it, other than it feeding the endometriosis and creating another cyst...but that's more info than you asked for! lol.
There's no way to be sure what your outcome will be, but no matter what you face you'll have sisters here who have similiar experiences and can offer you support along the way.
Having this surgery is scary...and I tended to think of all the 'worst' things I could face...but I've found that no matter how complicated it's been for me I've had support and understanding here...and I've never been alone through this ordeal.
So...make yourself at home hun...you're with friends here.
Hugs and healing,
Rita

Will My Ovaries Fail?
Wow - I didn't think anyone would answer me so soon. I posted my questions this morning. Thanks everyone. You know, I am very scared to have this surgery, the only other time I have been in hospital was to have my kids (who are triplets) 13 years ago. My doctor says this surgery is "ridicuolously easy from a surgeon's standpoint" he has done them for 22 years. Nice person, seems to answer all my questions, but then again he can only tell me what he knows based on medical research or proof, it is comforting getting to hear from ladies who have already gone through this and benefit from your information. Thanks again.

Dear Emma,
If your ovaries are healthy and you have no family history of ovarian cancer, why not keep them?? They can continue providing hormones (free ones!!) to help your bones, heart, eyes, skin, etc. for many more years.
My doc performed 25 hysts per week due to his specialty. He quoted me that 50% of ovaries will fail within 5 years of the hyst. I am almost 5 years post-op now and mine still seem to be doing ok.
Good luck on your research. I am sending huge cyberhugs
