enema????
I knew about the surgical socks, I knew I wouldn't be giving blood,(was told it's saved for major vascular surgeries these days) the douche is news, but wouldn't bother me..but the enema thing.
I thought enemas were no longer given because of the increased chance of heart attack? Okay, I'm 37 and the risks are small, but is this common?
Mainly I'm asking because I *hate* them!!!

Surgical stockings, giving blood, enema??
Yes, you will probably find yourself wearing support stockings of some sort to support the blood circulation in your legs immediately after the surgery. They are usually removed once you are up and moving. Donating your own blood in advance of the surgery is an option. A hyst isn't known for being especially high risk for blood loss but..its a personal choice. You will only be able to donate 1 pint and be advised it has to be done well in advance of the surgery date. I don't think enema's are needed in advance of a hyst any more but it could be your specialist wants to make sure your bowel is empty to minimize the chance of any bowel involvement during the surgery itself--talk to your MD about that. These days, its usually a Fleets enema ya buy at the grocery store--it could be awkward to give to yourself--I would recommend lying down on a towel and not sitting on the toilet to give it to yourself. Otherwise, ah the fun of having someone else do it for ya--show 'em your best side!
Plan to get outta that hospital bed as soon as possible and get moving. General anesthesia tends to slow your digestive system right down so moving around helps. It also helps to prevent blood clots in your legs. With pain control being what it is these days, it shouldn't be too bad and no, it may feel like everything is going to fall out the first time ya stand up (don't ever do it alone the first time or two!) but it won't. It will help your back is well as hospital beds aren't the most comfy things in the world. Bring your own pillow if ya want, especially if ya have neck problems.

good to know
Thank you for the advice, and I guess I'll just have to get over the issue of the enema.
I was told I'd get up after the surgery, probably the next morning and have to walk..may not remember it, but I know it's important.
Already prepared for the stitches and tape..better than the staples any day!
Just feel like I don't know enough, and I guess I freak out really easily. Thanks for listening.

enema????
My 2cents --
I donated blood for myself, two units, they weren't used.
No elastic stockings, either before or after the op, double robe, covered me front and back and slippers.
No special pre-op diet, no bowel prep, no enema, not even a fleet. I think that kind of thing is highly individualistic, dependent on patient, bowel involvement in surgery, and I highly suspect how the doc got over his or her own toilet training trauma. Very glad not to have had bowel prep, had to help my mom with hers for that up periscope procedure, definitely a nasty business.
So much of the stuff involved with the op is individual, so don't feel that you're getting a raw deal or have a bad doc if your experience isn't like someone else's.

Oh yeah, forgot about the shave. Had one, but not all the way down. Was left with an adorable little gotee (sp?) on Bald Mountain. Took a long time for my, well, bush, to return to full glory.

enema????
Has anyone heard of this prep? Two days before surgery I have to go on a clear liquid diet, the day before surgery I have to drink some kind of thing called Golytily then a Fleets enema at bedtime. Don't you think this is overkill! Thank God I'll be asleep during surgery because I figure I'll be in the bathroom all night the night before surgery!!

enema????
Janant,
Looks like I'm in for the same lovely treatment as you with one exception. My oncologist decided that in addition to the liquid diet and fleet phospho-soda, that I would need not one but TWO fleet enemas. Wow! I can hardly wait! As if the pre-op anxiety and stress isn't enough
already.

enema????
I jsut received my instructions for surgery on 1/9 and I have to be on clear liquids for 2 days and have to drink that golitley stuff. I had to drink something for a sigmoidoscopy. I pooped until it was clear water. I didn't even know that was possible. So I am not looking forward to it but my bowel has endo so I guess this is cleanist and safest but no fun.
Good luck to you.
Peace and Grace,
balancinglisa
