I'm stressing about this decision as well Di42 The sisters have been helpful with comments and opinions on the subject. What I'm doing is weighing the pros and cons of keeping it or removing the cervix. Hopefully someone can help you with your decision. Good luck to you!

Re: do i have my cervix removed too???? help, advice needed
I kept my cervix, I am almost 5 months post op, and it was the best decision I ever made. Dr did warn there is the possibility of mini periods. However, he went on to say these mini periods only affect less than 5% of women, and if you happen to be one, they are so light you wont even need a panty liner. He said I would only notice when I wipe. Well I have had nothing! I didnt even bleed right after surgery. I had my hyst due to an enlarged uterus, heavy bleeding and multiple fibroids. He also said that if for some reason I decide I want it gone later, it is a very simple, quick outpatient procedure. But with lkeeping it, I had no vaginal cuff to worry about, which seems to give so many women so many problems. Sex was totally the same, not afffectred at all, because the vagina was not touched at all. I had DaVinci, and everything was taken thru my small incisions. SO for me, keeping my cervix was definitley the right choice. I had a totally painfree recovery. I never had any pain or need for pain meds after the surgery. I honestly never felt like I had surgery. I was driving and shopping 2 days post op, and walked all day at the zoo at less than 1 week post op. I know I would of not been able to do that had I let go of my cervix. Good luck with your decision

Much does depend upon why you are having the surgery, I think.
Most surgeons will usually opt for keeping the cervix, if possible, as it gives a firmer base to all your internal organs too. Less chances for a prolapse.
Talking it through with the surgeon beforehand is the best advice.
My hysterectomy was for heavy bleeding and fibroids. I think though, at the back of their minds was a possibility of cancer as I had still not reached menopause at 57, and my Mother has a hyst for cancer concerns in her 50's.

Re: do i have my cervix removed too???? help, advice needed
I kept my cervix. I didn't want the vaginal cuff. I was worried about sexual problems if I removed it. My uterus was wrapped in scar tissue and my uterus was pulled to the left because the scar tissue was attatching to my wall. I did have a ball of endometriosis but it was small. I would say keep it if its healthy.

Thanks for posting ladies! I have been wondering this myself and I want to keep mine too. My surgery is 11/12. Pre-op on the 9th so will discuss this further with my Dr and tell him I want to keep it.

Re: do i have my cervix removed too???? help, advice needed
You will find that whether or not one should keep her cervix is a very controversial topic as stated in this study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20539807
There are surgeons who will NEVER leave the cervix for any reason other than a complication, and there are surgeons who try to leave it when the circumstances allow.
At this time, research indicates no difference in sexual experience with or without the cervix:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14756739
Studies are inconclusive regarding pelvic support. Some studies say it helps, others say it doesn't, and this one says the results are the same: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18060966.
For one, surgeons use procedures to carefully tack everything in place following a hysterectomy since a hysterectomy or other pelvic surgery can be a risk factor for prolapse. Two, the cervix itself can prolapse. Other causes of prolapse are genetics, heavy lifting, vaginal births, hormonal issues, obesity, smoking, and other health issues: http://www.webmd.com/urinary-inconti...topic-overview
Whether or not a woman should keep the cervical portion of her uterus will require frank discussion with her surgeon and second opinion about her diagnosis, which type of surgery is best for her, her overall health, the skill of the surgeon, and more. Remember, the cervix is not a separate organ; it is part of the uterus so what affects the upper part of the uterus can also affect the bottom portion of the uterus.
My personal experience was that I didn't have a choice regarding my cervix since it was also part of the problem. Twelve years post hysterectomy, I still don't miss it. Its loss has not negatively impacted my sex life, I have no signs of prolapse, moisture is fine, etc. etc. etc.

Re: do i have my cervix removed too???? help, advice needed
Weiser always gives great info!
I had my cervix removed. I had a couple abnormal paps and had a fibroid on it. It didn't make sense to argue to keep it.
I can't actually tell the difference with it being removed. Everything is the same. For me, keeping it would not have been advantageous.
But, women often feel strongly one way or the other and there's no right or wrong answer. (I know, that doesn't help when you're trying to figure it out for yourself. )
It's a good thing to discuss with your doctor and determine what's right for you.

Re: do i have my cervix removed too???? help, advice needed
HI All,
I have just been in to see the Dr, the op is being done through the vergina and he has said that because I have had smear tests that were abnormal before he strongly suggest removing the curvix. If i wanted the crvix left they would have to operate key hole. So the decision has been made.
thank youu all who replied and i have to say most people don't seem to have had any problems after the cervix was removed so i am hoping to be the same, think positively is the motto i shall use.
I have been informed that i will be in hospital for 3 days and can not return to normal for at least 6 to 8 weeks, no lifting, driving or housework.... even sex is a wait of 8 to 10 weeks!
I am feeling very nervous as the op day gets closer but i think this is normal. this site has helped sooooo much and i will be keeping you updated on how things are progressing.
Thank you all
