when am i past danger of complications?

I was wondering when i will past the point of having to worry about complications. I will be 4 weeks post op in three more days and still worry all the time about getting infections, internal bleeding, etc. Still have pains off and on but know this is normal but cant wait till i know i am past the point of having complications. Have been good about not doing to much and resting and not heading back to work till week 6. Had a little light bleeding end of week one for a couple of days but that is all

Re: when am i past danger of complications?

Because every patient and every surgery is a little different, it's impossible to offer a "one size fits all" answer but, speaking in general terms, 4 to 6 weeks is the general wisdom with regard to post-op infection and, so long as you do your part by following post-op instructions, you should be pretty safe from internal bleeding- just keep doing what you're doing- rest a lot, no heavy lifting, be careful about reaching way up or down, no sex until your doc gives you the green light....ease back into your usual activities rather than trying to go full bore back to normal activity. Expect quite a lot of fatigue as you become more active.... avoid vaccuuming and, oddly, changing bedsheets for a while longer (I'm 12 weeks and it's only the last two weeks that I can change sheets without real pain in my abs- turns out that it's more physical an activity than I ever realized) and try not to psych yourself out. The hardest part of recovery for me was that everything went so well that I was in terror of doing something wrong and screwing it all up.
Breathe, listen to what your body tells you and remember, this is not a race.
