Canning at almost 5 weeks post op...

Tuesday I will be 5 weeks post lavh. Well dh brought home 2 big boxes of Roma's last night. I want to make some salsa, but don't know if it should be done.

Am I crazy and should stay far away from doing that?

Or go for it?

Hey Havehope -- That sounds like fun IF you have somebody around to help lift the heavy pot and to take over when necessary if you get tired. Could a family member or friend hang out with you in the kitchen and pitch in when needed? We have the same surgery date (although mine was SAH, not LAVH) and I've been doing a fair amount of cooking recently, but still ask DBF to help me move heavy kitchen items and relieve me on stirring duty when I get fatigued standing at the stove, which sometimes happens without warning. So far this approach has worked out OK . . . Just my experience.

Yes, maybe with help. Just do what you feel you can do. You want to keep healing.

Can you sit at the table and work? And will you have help, especially with the heavy pots for sterilizing the jars? Perhaps you could make tomato juice out of some of it - that's easier than canning, I think. Or just freeze some of the tomatoes whole.

Ok, I found a friend who will come help me tomorrow and I will give her 1/2. We are looking at probably 50 to 80 pints. I love it so I want to do it and now that I found someone that can lift the pots I can sit at the table and chop away.

But I am sure I will be non exsistent on tuesday, lol.

Oh I don't know if I would say it is something that I love to do. I am just starting to learn. Last summer I did quite a bit. We have a good size garden so I try and can as much of it as possible, but this year not a lot is going to get done.
