Hi, Today was my 1st Preop and my GP said to stop my HRT. I have been taking Premarin for a year now and I'm afraid to stop. I'm going to call my OBGYN tomorrow and check that instruction with her since she will be doing the surgery and has not mentioned that I should stop the HRT. My preop with her is on Thur. I also take BP, Choloesterol, and a water pill. I don't understand why he might want me to stop that med. I've come to rely on it to keep me calm. Any ideas? Sneaker

Hi Mary!

I didn't start taking HRT until after my surgery, so I cannot share based on my own experience, except that...from what I have read here on the message boards, I've learned that some medications have to be stopped before surgery -- perhaps just on a temporary basis -- because of the way that particular medication may interact with other medications used during the surgical experience.

Please stop back and let us know what your OB/GYN says about it after you call tomorrow. I think it will be interesting to learn what the "stopping HRT" is all about.

Many s and Best Wishes,

Hi Mary I'm glad you're going to check with the DR who's going to be doing the surgery. I can't imagine why your GP would have told you to stop your Premarin; I've had four other surgeries since my hyst, and never once has the surgeon requested that I stop my HRT, though I've been told to stop lots of my vitamins and supplements 10 - 14 days in advance. I also can't imagine your DRs would want you suffering from menopausal symptoms while you're trying to recover.

Let us know what your GYN says, OK?

s,
-Linda

OBGYN Final Word

I talked with my OBGYN this evening and she said she doesn't want me to stop anything except the water pill and just stop that the day of surgery. So I am relieved and much more relaxed. When the GP said stop the HRT I got worried because it really helps me keep calm when otherwise I would be totally flipping out over a piece of lint. It's scary to me. I'm overly emotional or severely depressed without it. So this is wonderful news for me and now I'm relaxed. Well relatively speaking. Thanks for your input and concern. Love Sneaker
