What is a Vaginal Cuff?

What is a Vaginal Cuff and how and why would it become infected after a hysterectomy?

I wasn't clear on this either and point blank asked my doctor what it was. It is a term for the closure the surgeon makes where the uterus is removed. There is no foreign object "installed" (I imagined some kind of plastic ring or something!). It's merely the closure that's made. As such, there are stitches there and thus, much like an external incision, an area that could get infected (I had no infection issues so I wouldn't worry unnecessarily).

Let me be a little more clear - when I'm talking about where the uterus is removed, imagine the top of the vaginal canal where the cervix is and the uterus begins. This is the section where the "cuff" (aka closure) is.
