2 weeks post hysterectomy: Adipose tissue infection. nice way of saying fat infection
Hello and Happy New Year,
Tomorrow will be two weeks since my TAH. I feel a little better but no where near where I want to be. A few days ago, I noticed a hard swelling along the entire length of my abdominal incision. It hurt so bad, was so tender to touch. The hardness was the alarm for me. I called my doctor on call and was able to get in to see the nurse practitioner. She assured me that I did not need to go to the ER and could wait a few more days until my 2 week visit which was yesterday. The doctor told me that she could not remove my adipose tissue (my stomach fat) during the surgery so she had to put it back and then stich through it to close me up. She said this hard lump was that adipose tissue reacting to being moved and manipulated. She prescribed an antibiotic to ward off an infection just in case. What the???
I had several thoughts. I wish I would have had more time to prepare for this surgery. It was an emergency and I needed to get it done this calendar year since I already met my deductible due to a knee surgery done earlier this year. Had I had more time I could have lost some weight, esp around the middle, or at least tried to.
I wish I could have scheduled a tummy tuck of lipo since I am already suffering with abdominal surgery, why not make it really count.
But seriously, I did not know fat could get infected. That is scary. Is this bogus? Has this happened to any of you?

Please don't blame yourself for getting this infection! These types of "adipose" infections happen to even thin people. We all have layers of subcutaneous fat and muscle under our skin where sutures are placed after surgery. Those areas DO react in the healing process causing inflammation and pain. If bacteria enters that space then an infection can occur and MUST be addressed. It is a risk with ANY surgery, even your knee surgery.
It FEELS more personal because of the area of your body that was involved. We are more sensitive to that. Believe me, I have walked that road.
