No Cervix-So Worried!

Dear Ladies - Just wanted to hear some encouraging words from ladies in the same boat as me! I had a TAH/BSO with cervix removal. I did not have any issues with incontinence before or after surgery. A friend just told me that I am at greater risk for bladder prolapse now that my cervix is gone. I had my surgery in June. I have been feeling great up until today - I am so worried now about bladder issues! Are their other ladies out there that are doing fine with their cervix removed? Thank you all so much - I don't know what I would do without you!! Hallie

No Cervix-So Worried!

Is this friend of yours a doctor? I wonder where she got this information? I have no cervix, no bladder problems at all here! Do talk it over with your doctor if you are concerned, but I don't think you have anything to worry about.

No Cervix-So Worried!

I had my TAH/BSO, which included my cervix, in Oct. '06. At almost 4 months post-op, I am having no bladder issues. I agree with GFae - check with your doctor before you take this too seriously.

You should always call your doctor if you are worried. People mean well but can do more harm than good.
My doctor told me not to lift anything heavy as that what can cause prolapse after you have had your cervix removed (I had a LAV/BSO). My sisters doctor told her the same thing about 8 yrs ago. She had a TAV with one ovary removed, bladder sling and rectal repair.

Don't worry yourself sick, call your doctor and express your concerns.

No Cervix-So Worried!

Hallie,

Just a follow-up - for a while people thought that removal of the cervix would help with bladder prolapse, that was why they were doing so many subtotal hysterectomies (where they leave the cervix in). However, there have been many recent papers that studied this, and it was found to be an incorrect assumption.

Kegels are one of the best ways to avoid this problem, whether you have a uterus or not ... this site has information about these exercises.

My doctor told me there was a greater chance for prolapse if you don't have a cervix, however, he also said it was a very small chance. Talk to your doctor about your concerns.

I think your friend was misinformed. No one has mentioned this to me. I'm doing fine, and my surgery was one week after yours. Take heart, sister!
