Surgery risks

When I was at the doc tues and got my date, she was going through all of the potential risks (nicking bowel, ureter, bladder, blood transfusion, etc). I have had many surgeries before and know they have to tell you all of this, but how likely ARE these? I get a bit worried thinking of the "what-ifs?"

Also, I had my tubes tied 19 yrs ago and they went thru the belly button. Now with an LAVH, is it going to be harder for my doc to go thru the same site?

Feb 15 can't come soon enough but scary at the same time.

Wishing you all a fabulous weekend!!!

Statistically speaking, the risks are very low. However, if you become a statistic it doesn't matter if the risk was a fraction of a percent or not! For instance, I had a blood transfusion and possibly because something was nicked but we aren't sure what or how or when! Right now, we have a handful of women coping with having their bladder or ureter nicked. For them, it doesn't matter if the nick rate is in the single digits, what matters to them is they are dealing with that complication.

Here are some articles with some statistics in them, but keep in mind there are so many variable and so many hysterectomy types that the numbers are not set in stone:

Not necessarily. I have had three lap surgeries, all with a incision through the belly button. The first two were the same surgeon and he cut the exact same spot. The third was with a different surgeon and he cut up rather than down.

Re: Surgery risks

There are always risks, I'm up on the 31st of this month and concerned about the same things. I actually looked my doc up online to see if there were any complaints about her and was pleasantly surprised to see the biggest complaint was about her receptionist. This one google search gave me peace of mind that I'm in good hands.
I'll be posting after surgery so keep an eye out, I'm having the same procedure so I can help you through this by keeping you updated.
Hang in there.

Re: Surgery risks

I was shocked when i had a transfusion and was told i could get HIV, hepatitis .. Other stuff .. Could die .. And of course had to sign a waiver .. As the others have mentioned .. There are always risks .. But we have to weigh the risks vs the rewards and 10 days Post surgery the rewards are already kicking in!! Hang in there.
