39 y.o., hysterectomy recommended
So, I'm 39, and have always had very heavy periods, very strong cramps. I went on depo in college to good effect, then off to have my first baby, and onto Mirena until baby #2, after which I had a tubal ligation. Everything was ok for about two years, and then I started bleeding every two weeks, not always heavy, but enough to be annoying, and for an extended period of time (7-9 days, so I'd have about 5 days of relief in between). GYN tried depo again to stop the flow...nothing...so in November of last year I had an ablation. All was good until March, when I had a SCREAMING pain in my right side. It dissipated after about an hour and a half, but I am continuing to have discomfort in that area, not always the same spot, but in the general vicinity. So, I go to my GP about 3 weeks later when the pain hasn't completely gone away, and his PA sends me for an ultrasound of middle/upper abdomen, all normal. Doc sends me to my GYN who sends me for a transvaginal ultrasound, they found "debris" likely from the ablation, cysts on my LEFT ovary, and small fibroid, but no real answers, so they suggest exploratory laparoscopy in conjunction with an internist so he can look up and my GYN can look down...so I go consult with the internist, and he suggests that the area I indicate is where the ascending colon is, so I go for a colonoscopy...results normal...internist says possibly the pain is due to IBS. So I let it go for awhile, but then the pain in my side intensifies and I start bleeding again, every two weeks, like before, so that brings us to this past Thursday when I went in for the laparoscopy that was suggested with my GYN. He saw my uterus is 2x the size it should be, and "boggy", prolapsed, and large right ovary (though he says that's ok). So he suggested a TVH (keeping ovaries)...whew...so that's that...thoughts? Suggestions?

I would get a second and third opinion, and if they all agree, go for it. If you are done having children, why would you continue to be miserable when there is a fix for it.
Hysterectomy is a big surgery, no doubt, and the recovery is long, but not miserable.
I am almost six weeks out and I have not felt this well, even with all the healing that has taken place, in a long time.
At least with the surgery, there is an end in sight. With out it, you're waiting for menopause. At your age, that could be a long wait.

Your sound exactly how I was! I had 3 children via c section. With my last I had my tubes tied. Went on the depo shot for a year and stopped period. Then it came back like you, every 2-3 weeks lasting 10-14 days. I literally had 1 week of being free. My cramps were insane and I always felt bloated and miserable. The did an ablation and that helped for 1 year. Then everything came back like before. Did the colonoscopy and everything was normal, IBS was also diagnosed. Fast forward a year and went for abdominal ultrasound where they found a mass (polyp maybe) and a fibroid. They also said my uterus was over sized and boggy. My gyno suggested I have a hysterectomy and that is what I did. I am now 2 weeks post op. I have not bleed since the first day but I do have discomfort still. I won't know the full effect for another 6 months I'm sure.
I just couldn't handle the horrible cramps, clots and bleeding I had. It felt like I was always on a period.
Good luck with your decision, I hope you do what is best for you.
I wish I could give you more info but I'm still in the healing process.
ps- I am 42
Good luck
