Will hormone problems go away after hyst? (pregnancy discussion)

I guess I posted in the wrong place so I am going to copy and paste. So far I have yet to find anything or anyone with the same problems I am having.
Hi my name is Toni and I have never been here before. I am looking for answers. I have a consult on monday morning but I think I already know my options. I am 29 and a mother of 4 beautiful girls. I have always struggled with hormone levels. When I am pregnant I have hyperemesis gravidarum and have to be on IV's the entire time, a zofran pump, and for one TPN therapy. I alway say I am allergic to being pregnant lol. This usually lasts until a few weeks after delivery. We decided after our special needs daughter was born that we needed to be done and surprise I was pregnant with number 4. We researched different options I tried the patch, 6 different pills, 2 IUD's, the ring and who knows what else, all would make me start vomiting severely and an almost instant panic attack and depression. We decided my husband getting fixed was our best option. I have always struggled with ovarian cysts. I actually had one the size of a baseball, we were going to do surgery and I found out I was pregnant, it magically went away. Well I quit breastfeeding a few months ago and things have escalated. I am out at least 10 days out of every month. Severe pain, depression, vomiting, diarrhea, panic attacks. Last month my husband and I realized it is exactly when I am ovulation and a week before my period. The pain is strong for a few days but the worst part is when I am actually ovulation, for an hour a month I am in screaming pain (I had my babies natural and at home without screaming) Right before I start I feel like I am in labor. I am almost wanting to volunteer for a hysterectomy. I know they are going to try and put me on birth control pills first, but I have tried so many different kinds I am thinking about just asking them to skip that step. Has anyone had these hormone problems NOT go away after a hysterectomy? will the estrogen pills do the same thing to me afterwards. Right now I am taking darvocet about 10 days a month (I hate any medication, I am more of a naturalpath person) I have trouble taking care of my girls and homeschooling them for those 10 days a month. I'm so tired of this.

I definatey think you should see a gyno to give you all the options and answers. In the end if you have finished having children there is always the permanent option of a hysterectomy but the you probably need to think about wether or not you would keep your ovaries as they regualte your hormones. Try to be as informed as you can be then you will be confident with any decision you make.

From what you are saying, it sounds like the majority of your pain and symptoms revolve around ovulation. That wouldn't necessarily change at all with a hysterectomy.

If your ovaries are the issue, you need to talk to your doctor about your options which may include hormone therapy. It is possible an oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries) is something you should consider.

With your age, if you have a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO, removal of both ovaries and tubes) then you will need to discuss HRT options with your doctor. If you have not reacted well to hormones in the past, you may have a difficult time finding the right hormones following surgery. As estrogen can play a critical role in our overall health, you could be facing some difficult decisions and health issues.

Take some time to sit down and discuss your situation and your thoughts with your GYN. You might also want to talk to your GP. Learn what options they think might be wise for you and share your concerns.

Also, keep a symptom diary that you can share with your doctors. Include as many details as you can. You might like using ReliefInsite's online pain diary and/or it can give you some ideas of the type of information to include. The more information you can share with your doctors, the better able they can "see" what might be going on, helping them offer you the best options.

A hysterectomy is not a risk free surgery and comes complete with multiple miserable side effects. Thus, you want to make sure the pros outweigh the cons and you will know you made the right decision even if things don't turn out as you had planned.

My goes out to you and your pain issues and I hope you can find a solution soon!

Re: Will hormone problems go away after hyst? (pregnancy discussion)

I didn't know you could just get your ovaries removed. I am going to ask them to test me for endometriosis. I don't know if this can at all be related, but we live in a small town of 200 or so people and in the last 2 years 8 women have had sudden endometriosis and hysterectomy. Many are trying to relate it to the water supply. So I have a lot of friends who had it and they have all told me their symptoms started the same, at least their pain ones. I would much rather just have my ovaries removed but the hormones after the surgery are a big worry to me. You guys are so great and helpful. Some of my posts seem a little crazy, as thats how I feel about 10 days a month. Like a totally different person who has lost their mind. I ended up in the ER last night, the dr called me in some tylenol 3 for the pain and I had a bad reaction to it and a panic attack. I have never had a panic attack in my life and now suddenly I am getting them during every cycle. Right now I am a hormonal wreck. But on the bright side I know that in 2 days I will be fine.

Sadly, at this time there is no test for endometriosis. The only way to definitely diagnose endometriosis is through surgery, often an exploratory or diagnostic laparoscopy.

Some doctors can make an educated guess that endometriosis could be the culprit by ruling out other health issues first. Keeping the symptom diary could help in this area.

If you do have endometriosis, neither a hysterectomy or oophorectomy are cures. The key will be the skillful removal of the actual endometriosis implants themselves and not many doctors are able to locate and remove all of them. Hence, those of us with endometriosis should consult with an endometriosis specialist whenever possible.

You might want to take some time to explore our Resource Database. Keep a notebook handy and jot down any notes about what you read that might apply to you, and keep a list of questions to ask your doctors.

in there!
