Myomectomy/polypectomy/ablation or hysterectomy?

Hi everyone,
I'm new here, a resident of Ontario, Canada. I need some advice...
Three years ago my periods started getting very heavy and it was diagnosed with endometriosis and a small fibroid. They started me on progesterone and my periods would last for six weeks. I became anaemic. The OBGYN that I was seeing then recommended embolization of the blood flow to the fibroid. I didn't end up doing that as the specialist finally called with an appt the day before I was to fly to Europe and never did return my call... Three years later my ferritin level is 6 and no matter how much iron I take refuses to increase. After almost a year wait time I finally got in to see a new OBGYN (my last DR moved home to Australia) a sonohystogram showed that the fibroid is now 2cm x 2cm and most of it is embedded in the uterus wall plus I have three polyps. The doctor gave me two options; an ablation/polypectomy/myomectomy but warned that I will probably need another in six months or a hysterectomy. I opted for the latter and my surgery is booked for February 3rd. Is this the right decision? It would be a laparoscopic hysterectomy. Sorry for the long post... I'm just second guessing my decision after reading this board...

Re: Myolectomy/polyoectomy/ablation or hysterectomy?

Hi there! I can't (and wouldn't try) to tell you whether or not your decision was the right one, but I am happy to share my somewhat similar experience with you! Four years ago (give or take), I went to my OB/GYN with a period that had raged on for more than 3 months. He gave me the options you have, and in the end I opted for the ablation. My results of that were atypical and fantastic - nearly 3 1/2 years with no bleeding whatsoever. Until this August when everything returned with a vengeance: cramps, pain, violent mood swings, you name it. I ended up in such agony that I have been off on medical leave since the end of August. I had cysts, fibroids, and a 3cm thick lining of my uterus that, because of the scar tissue caused by the ablation, had nowhere to go even if it did slough off, which it wasn't. I had a total hysterectomy last week, which I knew was likely going to be necessary. Should I have just gone ahead then with the hysterectomy? I don't know; like I said, I had amazing but not typical results. I think between my OB/GYN and myself the right decisions were made all along, and I suspect that you and yours have done the same. All the very best to you from another Canadian! Blessed be.
