48 hours from now I'll be on the road to recovery

The question for those that don't want to wade through my rambles. Were there any things that were particularly easy to fix and eat that were tasty to you right after surgery? I have to make a grocercy store run in the morning and can't seem to think of a thing that sounds good to have on hand. At least nothing that won't spoil in a matter of a few days (like strawberries).

Now for the rambles just because thinking out loud helps keep the nervousness down blow panic level.

My surgery is on Thursday. It was originally scheduled for 12:30 that day but has been moved to 8:30. On the one hand, I am glad I don't have to wait all morning and go 12 hours without anything to drink. On the other hand, there as a part of my getting ready list that was planned for Thursday morning.

Needless to say, I am running around like crazy getting ready. Much cleaning still to do, buy groceries, pack and post some more activities to my online class and make sure all the work turned in today and tomorrow is graded.

I am so ready for it to be Friday morning.

Hey, Shirley!

My family pitched in a great deal when I came home, but I still had some thngs prepped for them. I got all the fixings ready for Sheapard's (sp?) Pie, and patted out some burgers. I wasn't really that hungry for the first few days. I spent a lot of time sleeping. I found out that I ran out of steam after my shower and a few hours slowly piddling around.

If your family likes them, get some casseroles together, some "throw in the oven" lasagna, or just something simple like soups and grilled cheese sandwiches.

Best of luck, girl!

Hey, destabee!

Think forward to Friday evening/Saturday morning! The first 36 hours were such a blur to me. I know I had some rough moments, and could have used more sleep than a hospital allows. Don't get discouraged if you find yourself disoriented and feeling 'ugh'...it gets better!

A word of caution about strawberries...I was told not to eat them - or strawberry ice cream or milkshakes - when I asked about having someone bring me a shake. The nurses told me that the seeds can iritate the bowel until you have regular bowel movements after surgery. To compensate, they gave me strawberry jello so I got the flavor at least! You might ask your doc/nurses about this and stick to strawberry flavored treats for a bit.

I've been home 2 mornings now (surgery was Thursday) and don't know what I'd do without frozen pancakes and french toast sticks. The syrup helps keep me regular - and the pancakes/sticks are just yummy comfort food. I've also liked having soft cheese and crackers (not the best thing if you are constipated though).

Gatorade has been a must as pop bothers me. Although I'm a pop-aholic and have had to have little cups of if now and then to stave off the caffeine headache if I don't have a bit. And, skim milk and grape juice.

I've also loved the taste of roast beef made with potatoes and gravy. Since I don't eat much, it goes a long way. Other meat hasn't really appealed to me but for some reason, the roast beef tastes really, really good right now. You might be able to make a bit of homemade stew this way and freeze it before your trip to the castle. Anything tomato based isn't appealing yet.

Now the killer...Ben & Jerry's. I get a desire for just a bite or two a couple times a day so it's lasting forever...but, man does it hit the spot. If you see a flavor - or 3 - you like, treat yourself. You deserve it!

Non-carbonated drinks for sure - you mostly won't want the additional gas from pop

I am a shrimp-a-holic, you name a way it can be cooked and I will eat it! On day 6 post-op I had shrimp from Outback. It's a little spicy and I could only eat one prawn because I couldn't handle the flavor.

So my advice is to go with the blander of your favorite foods. Roast beef with gravy and mashed potatoes was my first non-jello meal in the castle and it hit the spot so well. I second luvhouse on that one.

You might consider some of the really simple frozen entree's that you can just pop in the microwave when you get hungry... that way you can have a variety without having anything wasting away in the fridge. Pudding or gelatin cups are another good quick option that can give you a few calories without upsetting the tum those first few days, as are the little packages of peanut butter on cracker sandwiches.
