To those who have quit smoking...

I would love to take this opportunity to quit smoking. I actually would like to quit before my surgery, not while I'm in the hospital.

To those who have quit....
How did you do it?
If you waited to quit until your surgery date, was it difficult during recovery? Or were you so consumed with recovery that is was easier than you thought?

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks
Melissa

Re: To those who have quit smoking...

Hi, Melissa.

I have heard Chantix works well for some people, but it does have some nasty side effects for others. It made me feel like I was going to vomit constantly.

I recently quit. Smoker for over 20 years with asthma. I tried everything: patches, gum, wellbutrin, chantix. Patches, gum, and Chantix made me sick. Wellbutrin didn't work, even for my depression. What finally did it was seeing my mother go into cardiac arrest for blocked arteries due to smoking. They had to shock her 5 times to bring her back. I made the decision I was NOT going to let my kids or hubby see me like that. Took a week of re-playing the scene over in my head, but I quit.

I don't know if I am much help, but getting scared is the best way I found. I hope you find an easier way. Good luck!!

I'm 6 weeks smoke-free!!!

Re: To those who have quit smoking...

Wow, great job on quiting...you must be so proud. I am 36 and I started smoking at 16..yuck!
I think I just need to pick a date and then take it minute by minute. I am so worried about how I will feel. I've tried to quit cold turkey before and I get light headed and very anxious, but I know that is way better than what smoking is doing to me.

Re: To those who have quit smoking...

Thanks. I'm 36 and started sneaking my mom's cigarettes at 10, smoking solid at 14. I still feel slightly out of breath at times and I have to take a big, deep breath of air in, but I think that's simply because nicotine numbed the cells in my throat and lungs for all those years and I'm not used to feeling the air yet. LOL

I'm pulling for you. You will feel so much better if you quit (once the withdrawals die down, it's a BREEZE).

Re: To those who have quit smoking...

I am going to take this opportunity to quit smoking. Today is my surgery. I have it in my head this is my day to become healthier! No more pain from endo and no more smoking! Just focus on getting myself better. Please pray for me that both the surgery and stop smoking goes well! I hope you succeed as well! Thank you!

Re: To those who have quit smoking...

Chandra,
I quit on November 1 after 19 years of smoking a pack a day. YOU CAN DO IT! I can breathe better already, I can taste food better, I can smell better, and I can climb a flight of stairs without stopping at the top to catch my breath!

This is only after two weeks. Just think how good you will feel in a year!

Re: To those who have quit smoking...

Hello
Please don't take CHANTIX!!!! It nearly killed me in 2008. I was on it just 9 days and ended up going mentally crazy suicidal hurendous anxiety. I am currently usng the 21mg patch. I asked for it at the hospital. I am doing pretty good on it. NOT completly smoke free, I have maybe 3 to5 a day verses 1 1/2 packs a day. I plan on being smoke free by 2010. It is so hard, especially with all the recovery pain I had/have a the possiable job loss I am facing come dec 1, because I don't hve the option to return to work with any restrictions what so ever. I am expected to lift 50+ pounds for 8 hours, 6 days a week. I aready a convinced that won't happen. I refuse to jeperdize my health for such a ridiculous expectation of me.
Good Luck to u

I second the thoughts on Chantix. This drug should be banned. It makes you crazy. I took it for about 8 weeks before I realized that it was the drug making me insane.
