Fear of ripping stitches out due to straining after hysterectomy (LAVH/BSO)

I have a grade 3 cystocele, and was diagnosed w/ endometrial cancer in August. Had a total Hysterectomy (LAVH/BSO) on 9.29, and the surgeon told me he 'fixed' part of the cystocele. I was astounded I could pee sitting down, not like a 'skier,' which I'd had to do, after surgery. I notice now, some dribbling occurs. I'm 4 weeks out. Had a big BM (sorry, gross),and tried not to strain, the other day, but fear it may have ripped some of his handiwork out, internally. Have not had bleeding or anything - was constipated for over a week, had cramps, etc., then the big event. Now I just fear the prolapse work he did will 'come out.' Or that I ripped something in there. Don't see him until February. That will be first time he looks inside, as at my 2 weeks, he just removed the port stitches and went over my path report. I feel silly contacting him about this. Any thoughts? Input on what to do, if anything? Thanks. Ana

Re: Fear of ripping stitches out due to straining after LAVH/BSO

It is scary when we feel the need to push with a BM. have you tried taking stool softeners on a regular basis? That, along with drinking lots of water should help with that. I refuse to strain. If it's not happening after a few gentle tries, I walk about the house and do some chores then try again.

Why do you feel you may have done damage? If you ripped something inside, some symptoms you may experience are increased pain, bleeding, discharge and perhaps fever. I didn't have my first internal exam until 8 weeks. I had pain, orange discharge and a weird smell, so I made an appt with my family doctor. All was well for me. Is seeing your family doc or PCP an option for you? It may give you peace of mind.

I hope all is well. Remember to rest and lots of water!

Re: Fear of ripping stitches out due to straining after LAVH/BSO

Thanks... I don't know why I felt like I strained, other than some pain, 'midline.' I have a yellow-orange discharge as well and had symptoms of a UTI. At my 2 weeks, they ran a test, and I had one. Dr. gave me some Cipro for it. But the bm thing was rough - literally - very hard and hard to 'come out.' I tried not to strain. Exhausted after. Just hope nothing's amiss. Wondered because of the prolapse thing. It was essentially 'fixed' right after surgery, and I noticed some 'dribbling' of urine yesterday. So wondered if I 'popped' something. I also overdid this weekend, walking through Central Park. Ana

Call your doctor. It will ease your mind and honestly, that is what they are there for.

Re: Fear of ripping stitches out due to straining after LAVH/BSO

might have to try milk of magnesia. My doctor told me to if need be. I have a problem with stool being backed up right at the anus - those nasty sphincter muscles just don't want to stretch. I have had to 'dig' it out to get it started. I am not constipated, just plugs up there. A tablespoon of M of M every couple days seems to help a lot.
